New Rider ForumsJust joining the motorcyclist hobbie? Looking to get some information about a first bike? Or have some newbie questions. Are you new to the website?
Hopefully this doesn't open a big can of worms, but...
you're 100% right. i trust the snell rating system, tho. personally, that's what i'll always look for first. i hope that i never find out for sure if it's worth it or not...

I agree with the above advice, however a warning about Snell certification. *Gets the can opener*. The jury is still out on this I think. Snell testing involves a multiple impact test and the helmets that pass this tend to have more rigid polystyrene foam (the impact absorbing layer). Higher rigidity means more kinetic energy may be imparted on the skull. According to the report I read a while back, the DOT certified-only helmets have a less rigid layer and therefore impart less kinetic energy to the skull. I'm not even sure if any of this will matter in an actual crash. Also, I believe that for a helmet to be considered street legal, it MUST pass DOT certification.
I went with an Arai Vector, one of their cheaper models. Its Snell and DOT certified and it fits. Just make sure that whatever you go with, it fits snugly and that you buckle it before you ride. I see a lot of guys out there that have these nice full face helmets with the unbuckled straps hanging down. *sigh*.
Oh, one other thing, its advisable to get the helmet in solid white. Any other bright color would probably be good too but I would avoid the dark colors. Solid colors are cheaper too!

As many have said, it's all about trying on as many helmets as you can and seeing which one fits you the best. Buy the one that is slightly tight when you try it on. I made the mistake of buying the one that fit perfect (was an HJC) last year and within a couple of months (if that long) I was having to replace the pads with a smaller size, and had to do that every month until I finally saved up for a new helmet. I now have a Shoei X-11 and LOVE the way it fits my head. When I first got it it was rather tight, but after wearing it for just a couple of hours on a ride it was fitting perfectly and I couldn't be happier. The main thing though is to find which brand fits YOU the best. We all have different head shapes, so it's going to vary for each person.

You can expect a new helmet to loosen 3-5% after a bit of use. If you find it loosens too much for your liking, you can always get different cheek pads to make it a bit more snug.
