I understand that you want to stay alive...
I understand riding your own ride...
but dude c'mon...
really it sounds like you are whining more so than sharing an experience about a group ride that probably should not have happened at this point in your riding career (read: did not take the time to look at your rider resume or experience). I am sure at one point or another prior to the ride you had a feeling that as soon as every SS got on the highway that it was going to be WOT, right? I mean you've been riding in Jackson and I am sure you're kinda used to how people ride? You hung out with the group prior to the ride, so you got a feel for their personalities? I'm sure someone said, blah blah blah you can't keep up or blah blah blah I'll smoke you. Looks like all the signs were laid out in front of you prior to riding out....

And this is really all that needs to be said about this. Anyone who even has a desire to ride with 50 people in any setting is more than likely some kind of colossal follower, and no one you should give a rip about being seen with.
You did the right thing by not getting out of your comfort zone. Now do the next right thing, and tell your "friends" to fark off.

Better than arriving at the ER in a gurney because you decided to be a moron and tried to keep up.
Take it easy and have fun with it. Who the fock cares what others think? Motorcycling is for your own enjoyment. Screw others.

I was told early on stay in the back some guys are jerks and very dangerous to ride with so there I was in the next to last slot in a group of 50 or more bikes...
|
This is the problem. These guys are jerks and dangerous. You knew that, and you still rode with them.
Find better friends.

Ya, I went on my first "group ride" of 6 and I was worried about people giving me crap for riding my 15 year old bike. But surprizingly I didnt catch any flak at all, a couple people even complimented it. When we got on the road I hung all the way in back, and I pretty much set the pace. But my friend, and his friend bailied to see a movie, they told me they would so it wasent a big deal. So it left the people up front. They started to power the front wheel off the pavement a little bit, and I didnt want to ride with them so I went a rode home. No big deal but a lot of fun.

I get left behind too somtimes. At first it bothered me but not anymore. I came to except that the guys I ride with have more experience then me and thats the way they ride. So for the last couple weeks I've been riding on my own. Rain, hot weather, heavy traffic, morning, night. I havent driven my car in two weeks and when I ride on the highway I find myself riding at 85-95mph. If i don't look at my speedo I don't realize how fast i'm going. So don't worry you'll be able too keep up with those guys eventually. Just go at your own pace peer pressure can get you killed in this case.

Good call to the OP for riding within his limits...BUT you should also take this as a learning experience. Riding with other experienced riders is IMO, one of the best ways to learn. I got left in the dust on my first group ride, too (including by the guy that invited me), but it pushed my limits. I didn't do more than I could handle, but I did more than I would've done on my own. Even Lee Parks says you have to overcome fear to become a better rider.
Fast does not necessarily = reckless. I'm a big advocate of safety, but come on guys...getting a sport bike to always do the speed limit is like getting an iPhone just to make phone calls. For way less money, you can get the same two-wheel experience on a scooter.

this guy knows what he is talkin about. riding outside of your abilities will get you hurt, or even killed.
i went on a group ride a few weeks ago with 10 other riders and i was at the back of the pack, was fine thru the day then at the end got a little greedy and went into this turn a little too fast to keep up and ended up crossing the double yellow. fortunately no cars were comin or else i would have been the bug on that cages windshield.
that was a slap in the face for me so now i watch myself much more, esp in group riding atmospheres.
