Default My dad trying to talk me out of wanting a bike

My dad emails me links like this: Motorcyclist killed in collision with tractor

and this: Woman's first cycle ride ends in death

hes not really a risk taker. I thought about trying to explain why I want one and this and that but he will probably ignore what I'm saying and link me more deaths in the paper.

is there anything I can say to him? your ruining my dreams, dad!! lol. he knows I'm the most calm and relaxed person in the world. Luckily I can do whatever I want and don't need approval from anyone IF or WHEN I decide I want a bike

You think YOU have it bad? My dad is the Senior Vice President of Risk Management at a very large Anesthesiologist networking company.

Talk about being risk averse.

If he lives close enough, have him take the MSF course with you. Or at least come watch some of the range drills. Calm and orderly mostly.

19, and yes. however its my decision if I get one or not and my mom said she'll pay for the MSF course, it costs I think around $200 here, she still would rather have me not get a bike, can't really blame that. my dad though is highly against it.

He could throw you out after you buy it. But, if it's your money, and you're your own man.. Then you'll do what you have to.

I am happy that my mother is supportive of the fact that I want a bike, but that's probably because she told me that after I turn 18 my arss is outa the house haha

bet i suggest you sit down and have a serious conversation with your dad and ask him if there is anything you can do to make him more comfortable with you buying a bike

I wouldnt want my 19 year old riding a motorcycle. ESPECIALLY if I lived in Florida. There is no denying that motorcycling is an inherently risky activity, much more so than driving a car.

I'm sure you hard core rider/dads will disagree, but as long as I could stop him, I would stop my son/daughter from riding.

If he pays for anything of yours (food, school books, whatever), then you have no right to do something he deliberately forbade. That's straight up insolence. If, however, you pay him rent, pay for your food, and all that stuff, then kindly tell him you will do what you like.

Agreed that if they support you in ANY way, you need to honor their wishes.

On the other hand, did you show your dad the stickies in this forum? Show him the gear you intend on buying and wearing ALL OF THE TIME.

Sure bikes are more risky than other things in life, but you can manage some of that risk by your preparation and attitude. Hell, you can get run down going to the mailbox (ie: Stephen King).

I have a t-shirt that says: Everyone dies, not everyone lives. (ReaperWear) That's how I feel about it.

How many car wrecks does the average driver see a week? About 1 a day? Does it make people get out of their cars? NO.

People can die on the road no matter what they drive. Motorcycle, car, truck, scooter, anything.

It's your choice. Some people just don't like motorcycles, or have a fear of them, and they try to put that fear into other people.

I've heard people use great logic, like "I had a buddy that died on a bike...You should really quit riding, man!"

Or "People get killed on motorcycles all the time...why would you want to ride one?"

I usually come back with "But people die in cars, too. How come everyone still drives?"

Nick
