Went to the Dealer and they..
They were really trying to Push a Kawa 600.. I told them I'm only interested in a 250.. Maaaaaaaybe a 500.. Dude was like, "What!? dude you;ll be bored on that in no time.." He was really tryin to push that 600.. I was sittin there thinkin WTF.. I told him I've only been to the MSF and that was last year.. He still kept insisting on a 600.. But they had no 250's.. said all the others that are comin in are already sold, and that's like 10 more for the rest of the year.. he said they're gettin some brand new '07 250's, but if i get an 07 I'd rather get a used one rather than spend $3G for a new one..

They, like nearly everyone, are only interested in making a buck. The salesman will get a bigger commission on a 600. If you go out and kill yourself on it, he doesn't have to give back the commission. Stick to your guns and find a 250/500.
BTW, you'd be amazed at how many salespeople at my local dealerships don't even own a bike or ride. Their advice is useless. Do your research before you get there, know what you want and buy it. Don't let them push you into something else that they know nothing about.

dealers for the most part are douchebags, they dont care about whats right for you, they wanna sell you whatever they'll make the best commission off of. that being said, its tough to get a hold of the new 250's. Unless you're planning on keeping it for more than just learning id suck it up and go buy a cheap used 250 and beat it up for a season or two then buy a newer bike

Keep looking after your own interest since most salesmen wont do it. I was in sales for years and it was very rare to have a salesman who was a rider much less a trained one.

At my local dealerships, it would actually be HARD to find a 600! Christ, the dealer closest to my house has nothing but liter bikes in stock! They put them right out front, and THAT'S what they push!
I was walking through all the rows of new liters on my way to the parts department, and I overheard the salesman and another customer talking. The customer told the guy flat out that he was brand new to riding, he had ridden a scooter/Vespa ONCE, and how all his buddies were getting bikes now, so he had to get one.
The salesman was saying that a new ZX-10R would be PERFECT for him, and that it was a "great starter bike" because you could "just ride it around in first and second gear until you get used to it..."
I just shook my head as I walked by...
Salesman don't give a shit about you. They are there to sell bikes. Period. It makes no difference to them if you die your first day on the bike. You signed the contract, which means that they get their commission check! After that, they won't even recognize you anymore.

the same thing happened to me one day. i went to the stealership and asked for a 250 or 500. the stupid salesperson tried to to sale me a custom r6 that they had overhauled saying it would be perfect for and i told them i have NEVER ridden a bike before. They dont care about your safe being. Money is what makes the world go around and long as they are making their money they dont care if u get killed right in front of them.

He has a point, though, you will probably be bored with that 250 very quickly.

I've found the dealerships with the oddball bikes to be better about it. The big Jap sellers seem to be all about money and volume, the little guys are more about the bikes and actually care about the riders.
My room-mate had an interesting conversation with the owner of Letko, our local Ducati, Agusta MV, and KTM dealer. They talked about how he killed about a half a dozen rich assholes every year. They'd come in and HAVE to get the baddest ass Ducati as their 1st bike for the image. He'd desperately try to convince them to learn on a friendlier bike first and would even give them a certificate for the MSF course. They'd blow him off because their egos were too big and he'd sell them the bike (they'd just buy it off eBay anyway). He'd watch the obituaries and about 25% of the time he'd see their name within 2 or 3 weeks.
My H-D / Buell dealer has courses on site and won't try to over-sell you. They want to bring you into the fold so they can sell you a starter bike, then have you trade that in on a bigger bike, then have you trade THAT in on a BIGGER bike, etc. . . plus they'll be happy to sell you all the safety gear, riding cloths, accessories, chrome, etc. . . you could ever want. They're in it for the long term profit and that means keeping you alive, safe, and riding.

People that get bored of 250s or 500s don't truly appreciate riding.

I see this all the time. Especially when I was buying my first bike.
I was talking to the dealer I got my 500 from, the owner actually...
He won't sell 600s/liter bikes to newbies. Flat out refuses to.
I'll keep buying from him.

Honestly I think it depends on the salesperson. The lady I bought my ZZR from asked plenty of questions about my riding experience. Since I was relatively new she recommended a GS500F. Ended up getting the ZZR used for about the same price as the new GS, mostly cause of the cool factor I will admit.
This is also one of the biggest dealers in Ohio.
