It is arguably one of, if not the best sportbike to start on. Have you priced around for insurance or anything yet?

AWESOME bike for starting out on. I started on it in April (got the 08 in the blue) and have loved it. I've built so much confidence on this bike that I know I wouldn't have gained by starting on something different. Not to mention it is MUCH more forgiving if I make some stupid mistake that all of us noobs are going to make at some point and time. Several of the guys I ride with that have been riding for years have sat on my bike or even ridden her and talked about what a great beginner bike it is and how I will be so glad I started on the 250 vs a 600 or whatever.
**My insurance on the 250 is $150 a year

I'd get it. Hell, I even thought about trading my 05 for an 08. But that's just not logical.

Rather it's a 250 or 1000. Take a MSF course, read some books and subscribe to some threads. Whats important is that piece of meat between your two ears. Never ride beyound your limit.

63 a month!? What kind of insurance!? I pay $15.67 a month for liability. And $7.33 for comprehensive on my 05. Obviously the 08 will be a bit higher.

Great starter bike and the fact that you're looking for advice and taking it in stride bodes well for your future riding career.
Good luck.

Get one, you won't regret it. Got 3.5k on my 07 since November and it just keeps on giving - commuting, highway, twisties (especially twisties).
It'll also give you what ya need, skill-wise, to get the bike you wanted before you smartened up and got the 250 1st.
Good luck with your choice.
Also, take the MSF, get the right gear and all that before beginning your new addiction.

arguably the best beginner bike out there. but like lazy said it doesnt matter if its a 250 or a hayabusa, without a good basic foundation of skills and safety knowledge youll hurt or kill yourself just as easy. MSF is the best investment you can make in your riding career, you leave with knowledge of basic bike manuevers, avoidance technique, more confidence, and a license
