1992 Ninja 600R
I've been looking for a decent starting bike and Ninja 250's are hard to come by. I'm definitely set on starting on something with low power and I've read all the stickies about not starting on 600's. However, a guy at my dad's work is selling a 1992 Ninja 600R for $1,500. I was wondering since it's an older bike if maybe the power was less than the new 600's? Would this be a good bike to start on or is it as fast as the new SS's? I couldn't find any specs on this bike.
Thanks for the help.

A '92 will not have the same amount of power of a newer 600cc bike, but I still wouldn't necessarily recommend one. You will probably need to replace some stuff.
I would recommend a newer 500cc or 250cc bike, but most will still be more than $1.5k. The upside is that you'll have a newer bike, possibly fuel injected, that will require less maintenance and have more amenities than an older bike. You'll also learn more out of it, and when you go to sell it for a "real" bike down the road, you'll get back all that you paid for.

I agree with 2colorshoe, the Ninja 600 (ZX6) is alot of bike. That was my second bike, I started with an ex500 which was perfect, then moved to a 91 ZX6, this had a jet kit and muzzy exhaust.. but I really think it is alot of bike for a beginner... just my opinion. Just want you safe.

I doubt the 650R is pulling in the same numbers then the newer SS bike. The 650R is a great bike IMO. this was the first bike I started on.

Power wise it shouldn't be a problem but its weight will make learning harder more than likely.

i got a 93 yamaha 600 and besides it being touchy and needing a little love, i've had no problems with it whatsoever. it shouldn't need too much work unless it has a ton of miles on it, mine just turned 10000 when i bought it. and as for being a learner bike, i think mine worked great, although i just rode my buddy's brand new 08 yamaha r6 and i'm totally lookin to upgrade already...
