New Rider ForumsJust joining the motorcyclist hobbie? Looking to get some information about a first bike? Or have some newbie questions. Are you new to the website?
I remember driving down the road with my grandparents in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada. I was sitting in the back of my grandpa's Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight, watching the Honda Shadow in front of us carving the winding roads through the Laurentian mountains. The rider was my father.
I remember getting ready for school and my dad saying that he was expecting someone. We had to get our pictures taken on his Goldwing before it was too late. I didn't understand, but I got on the bike with my little brother. Just as the camera clicked, the bike tipped over and crashed to the driveway. Dad just smiled and said it didn't matter, he would just take some money off the purchase price. I didn't understand why he wasn't angry, as I knew my father had a short temper. But he looked peaceful.
A man showed up and paid my father $3000. I saw dad clench his jaw as the man rode off.
Years pass.
I now understand why my father didn't care about the fallen bike. The picture was worth more than the damage caused. I understand why he gave up something he loved, so he could be there and support his family.
I remember this past winter. New job, new life. Hours upon hours spent researching. Magazines, websites, Ebay, motorcycle trader, our local paper. Buying the best gear my budget would allow. I picked up a Shoei RF1000. Everyone I talked to thought I was a crazy for buying $1700 worth of gear before I even had a bike. Spring came and I had made my decision.
I remember going to the dealership for the first time. All the bikes I knew were there, but I wasn't looking through a computer screen or at a photograph. They were all there; real. And in the middle of the showroom floor sat my motorcycle. A black 2008 Ninja 250.
I remember the day I went to that same dealership with dad. He warned me about the salesmen. To hold your cards close.... We left a deposit an hour later. My friend offered to help me transport the bike home, as I didn't know how to ride. Sitting in the passenger seat of my friend's car, watching my new bike on the trailer. Longest ride of my life.
I remember the look in my dad's eyes when he saw it; there was something familiar. He asked if he could take it for a quick spin. I told him I'd let him if he would teach me how to ride.....
when i got my 250 my dad who hadn't been on a bike in over 30 years putted down the street, chicken legs dangling and all. it made me pretty happy to see.

We know you're a unique and special snowflake. We know you're the exception to the rule. We know you're not like all those other dumb assed n00bs that wadded themselves up. You're a mold breaker, babe! You're a natural. You were born to tear it up on a hot rod stuntin' superbike.
