New Rider ForumsJust joining the motorcyclist hobbie? Looking to get some information about a first bike? Or have some newbie questions. Are you new to the website?
I was just wondering what the highest gear most people use when riding on the street. I figured 3rd gear is the highest needed on the street, but sometimes I feel like the bike would rather be in 4th. The speed limit is normally around 35-45mph. A buddy says he sometimes rides in 4th gear, but to me, traffic doesn't seem to move fast enough for it. I'd just like to know what some of ya'll do?

35-40 i'm usually in 3rd or 4th, 50-60 i'll take it up to 6th usually just to save on gas. Depends on the route i'm taking, if I'm going to hit a lot of lights I like to keep it low.

Most people are overly worried about lugging the engine. If you want to cruise/save gas, just shift at the recommended points in the manual and you won't be lugging (for the FZ6 for example):
Go ahead and run the bike where you think it needs to be run. If it feels buzzy or seems noisy, then go a gear higher. No one says you need to wind out every single gear all the time. To be honest, about the only reason I will stick to a lower gear in town is to remind myself not to go too fast, otherwise I cruise around at low ropms in the upper gears a lot.
If you are in a higher gear and want to suddenly accelerate, then you will have to drop a gear or two. It might take a second, but by in large it shouldn't be a problem.
I try to keep it between 3.5k and 5k rpms when on the street, so when I'm at 45-50, 4th gear is where I'm at.
I should really check out that manual again, though. I've been trying to get a good mpg on the bike, and I've been getting around 55mpg. I'm really trying for 60, though, and I should be able to do it if I go strictly by the manual.
