I don't think they care. When I took my course they're were several people who had ridden before myself included. They treated everyone the same. They are there to teach you not judge you on weather you ridden before or not.

I rode to my MSF, and had already had my license. They didn't seem to care so much, aside from a few jokes ;)

It doesn't matter to them on one way or another. but if they know that you have some riding time, that will give them time to work with someone that has no riding time at all. But the course is a really basic one. You don't have to worrie about the 600 miles!!!!

The question is just aimed at promoting discussion. It is not used in any practical way by the instructors. You can say whatever you want, but lying is entirely pointless.

At my class, it seemed like they only wanted to know so that they knew what skill level we were at... not to judge us. I felt really comfortable saying I was a total noob. Hell, I had NEVER driven a stick in my life in a car, let alone a bike... and they were cool with that. They treated the guys that had been riding for years the same way they treated me, which I thought was great.
I don't know how all instructors are, but the ones I had and heard about were super accepting of everyone. Makes things easier to tell the truth anyways.

What the hell is the matter with you? You should always tell the truth.
My momma would beat you for even asking the question.

LOL! @ some of the responses!
Yes you should always tell the truth, but... well the but doesnt matter
anyway, told the truth - said i'm a newbie and that I only had 600 under my belt piece.
Only bad habits I picked up in that time was two fingers always on the brake while riding. Instructor said thats good for track but definately not street. On street, it's all four fingers to brake, all four around the throttle when not braking.
Other bad habit was never really using back brake, but i learned how much that helped with the low speed maneuvering (sp?).
Two newbies who have never ridden before want a gixxer 600 and a cbr600... He said "This is your first bike? Make sure you pay attention! LOL!"
Anyway, one guy dumped his bike the first day and another guy is bound to fail he is just out of control. I'll tell more about it later, I have to get going - it's nice out and a buddy is waiting for me to go on a nice long ride.
PS, those 250's are actually fun!!! I'm tempted to pick one up as a second bike to cruise around haha

When I took my course they split us up into 2 groups. The people who have never ridden and people who have some experience. There were 2 instructors for each group. We split the parking lot in half and each had a side.
It was good.

I guess what it comes down to is my attitude and the vibe i put out. I worked hard for all my shit (arai lid, a* jacket, puma flats...), i'm smart enough to wear it, and I'll definately be humble and willing to learn. Prolly shouldnt second guess myself... Never do with anything else, but this is just very new to me and getting through this course successfully is important to me.

This is late.. but who the fuck cares? I came in with my KBC Force Helmet, my Icon Hooligan jacket and gloves, and I had ridden about 500 miles. As long as you let them know you are there to learn, there won't be a problem.

It doesn't matter what your experience is. My class was mostly new people. One guy had 20 years experience, his wife had failed her last MSF, another guy had been riding for about 16 years and my hubby had ridden regularly 10 years ago.
The rest of us had never been on bikes.

Of the 10 people in our class 8 had ridden before, of those about 6 had been riding for a long time.
The instructors treated everyone pretty much the same. Although a few of us got told we were going to fast after we started scraping pegs. (we weren't trying to but the ground clearance on those bikes was pretty low)

tell the truth about your experience...i did
i had over 8k under my belt when i went through...granted my instructors said you didnt look through the corner unless you made some obvious head jerk move and because of that and the curve grading...i should have failed...
i look through corners but i dont twist my head like its broke...
well how was your experience...

I had a whole summer's worth of riding behind me when I finally took the MSF (finally found a class that wasn't full). Even though I had ridden for a little while before the class, once I was in the class, I quickly found out that I hadn't been PROPERLY riding! While watching the videos and doing the book test in class, I noticed a bunch of bad habits I had...
The range part was fun. Once they showed us how they wanted it done, I aced it on the first try. Only got yelled at once---For scraping the pegs while doing the fast sweepers/obstacle avoidance test (damn Honda Rebels are too LOW)

nice. got my license yesterday Had the best score in the class with a zero! (along with one other guy, but he hit a cone on the swerve so that counts as a point in my book )
It was definately fun and i'd do it again. Very very hot/humid out though. It rained our first day out but yesterday it was just hot. Good times, learned a lot.
