New Rider ForumsJust joining the motorcyclist hobbie? Looking to get some information about a first bike? Or have some newbie questions. Are you new to the website?
I just got back from a local shop and tried on some helmets. The helmet I tried on was the HJC CL-15 because that is what our vendor Performance Motorsports has good deals on so thats what I tired. I need to get a helmet for the MSF course in June and I'm torn between a Medium and a Large.
With the medium helmet, as I put the helmet on and take it off, if I'm not careful it feels like the helmet is going to ripe my ears off. Once the helmet is on it feels snug and comfortable but I don't know if it will be that comfortable after the helmet is on for an hour. It almost fells a little to tight where it would cause headaches.
With the large helmet, putting the helmet on and taking it off was very comfortable. With the helmet on, it was still very comfortable, but it felt a little on the loose side and the helmet also looked bigger on my head vs. the medium.
I've read that the helmet needs to be snug but not cause pressure points or pain. So can the liner in the medium get broken it to fit loser or be changed to not be as tight? Or should I just get a large and take the safe way out comfort wise?
I sorta had this problem also when I got my helmet. First thought it was WAY to tight and now it feels so comfy it is amazing. It is the first "comfortable" helmet that I've had. Even though I've only had two.
Yes, the liner does get broken in after wearing it over time.
Another option, though, is to get replacement pads for your helmet. You can order them a little smaller in the medium sized helmet, or you could order them a little larger and get the larger helmet.
Just be sure that the final fit is tight enough where it moves your cheeks when you move the helmet.

It will break in, if you are torn between sizes you should always go DOWN smaller (unless some other factor contributes). Go with the medium.

do yourself a favor and try other brands as well, the best price doesnt always mean its the best for you.
that said I've found that the CL-15 is a great first helmet for new riders. choose the medium because it will definitely break in. it should be very snug and as long as its not causing pain it will loosen up and be fine
I'd recommend wearing it for at least 5 minutes, then when you take it off see if you've got any red places on your face, like on your forehead. If it's putting that much pressure on you in a few minutes, after an hour of wearing it that'll be unbearable. Also different brands fit different shapes of heads. I can't wear a Shoei, for instance, they're too tight. I've got an HJC AC-12 Carbon and I love it. http://www.hjchelmets.com/
I'd try different helmets. Even different models within a manufacturer's line can fit different.
What you're describing sounds like two ill fitting helmets. True, the pads will relax a little after a couple of hours wearing the helmet, it shouldn't feel uncomfortable even when you first wear it.

Good to hear. After searching for a good fitting helmet for 2 weeks I found one today. But after reading what others say I was getting a bit worried.
Is it normal for a new helmet to make ur face red when on? I measured up for my new scorpion ex400 and my head diameter is 57 mm which is in the sizing guidelines of m 57-58mm but when it is on my cheeks feel really squeezed together and there is quite a lot of pressure taking it off and on. Thanks.
+1 to trying on different brands. A medium RF-1000 may fit your head shape completely differently than a medium CL-15, for example.
As to krazydru: I'm not sure if it's "supposed to," but my helmet makes my cheeks red. It also is uncomfortable when taking off because it feels like it's ripping my ears off. Luckily, though, it is still a good fit because I can't shift it around and I've never gotten a headache from it. It will feel much more comfortable over time. I'd say the redness probably isn't a big deal UNLESS it is painful. I'm not sure where the line between "slightly uncomfortable and snug" and "painful" is, because it's a very fine one. Just try and wear it as long as you can, check for pressure points (not just your whole face being generally redder) and a headache.
