Hey, knock it off! Rationalizing is one of the great joys of riding a motorcycle. Sure, we all spend a fortune on gear, tires, and all kinds of other things. But we are having a blast, and we can always hide behind getting better fuel economy when confronted by what a bunch of illogical idiots we are. So, there you have it. I ride my bike because I want to contribute less to global warming and spend less on fuel. It's my story, and I am sticking to it.

Your comments are great Gaoleee, but noobies don't understand that they are making irrational rationalizations when they say they are going to save money by purchasing a bike. You and I both know that every bike we have ever or will ever purchase is nothing but a money pit, but that is because we've both owned multiple bikes and seen it proved over and over again.

There is another thread where this same conversation is going on. I came up with a bike saving somewhere around $180 per 1,000 miles driven instead of driving a truck that gets 13 mpg. This calculation doesn't take in to account the obligatory joy riding necessary for having a bike either.

What I came up with basically says that for a 500cc bike, $120 a month payment, $60 a month in insurance and the tires, oil changes, bare minimum gear and etc a rider has to replace about 25,000-30,000 miles of car/truck miles with bike miles just to break even on the purchase with my payment and insurance estimates.

Only the most dedicated riders put even close to that on any bike, let alone do it in just one year. Just as an example, I've been riding street bikes for 6 seasons and I've had my seasons that I rode a lot and season that I didn't ride much at all and I've only logged about 35,000 miles of seat time in those years.

Haha, yeah. I saw the other thread about the exact same freakin thing and I decided to stay outta that one, since you had already posted something similar.

But of course the sport of motorcycling involves rationalizing! That was the entire reason I was able to get my bike when I did, as my excuses sounded good if you didn't actually do the math.

YOU WILL NEVER SAVE MONEY OWNING A MOTORCYCLE.

GEAR
MAINTENANCE/OIL CHANGES
STORAGE?
INSURANCE
EXTRA GAS BECAUSE OF JOYRIDES
AFTERMARKET PARTS
EXTRA RISK OF SPEEDING TICKETS

itd take 10 years to make up the money you will spend, and by then you will be a complete addict who takes unnecessary 500 mile rides, and owns 5 motorcycles, therefore completely killing the "SAVE MONEY" idea.

its just not a moneysaver...It is one of my favorite things in the world, but not a moneysaver. Remember that.

jimbau, as others have said - don't get a bike in an attempt to save money on gas, the numbers aren't in your favor much. The REAL reason to buy a bike is because you want a bike.

That said, with a 30-mile round-trip commute never exceding 55mph and a budget of $2k to $2.5k... well, sorry to say this, but have you thought about a scooter?

Regarding gear, webBikeWorld is a good review site for all sorts of gear.

Also, never buy a helmet without first trying on. Fit is very important. Search for a motorcycle store in your area and try ones you can afford - $100 is about the cheapest that they'll come. Scorpion, Shark, HJC, KBC, Bell all make inexpensive helmets. They won't have the features or advanced materials of the $500+ Arai helmets, but they'll protect your skull. Up to you if you want to buy from that store, or look online for a cheaper price. DOT certification is a must, SNELL certification isn't required by law but is also a must, IMO.
