Default Another new guy with a couple questions

First of all, love the forums. Learned alot with almost every post I've read so far.

Down to business.

As the title suggests, I'm looking to start riding and I have a few questions I was hoping to get answered before I made any decisions.

First of all I think it should be known I'm not one of those guys that wants to buy the baddest, fastest thing out there for my first bike and that I'm 5'10 and about 160 lbs so I'm not in need of a huge bike. My plan is to do some dirtbike riding again to get back in the hang of riding and then purchase an older used street bike since I'm pretty positive it's gonna hit the ground a couple time while learning the in's and out's. And after a good amount of seat time on the used bike get a nice new bike. But that is still a ways off. My question is this...

What is a good bike (year/make/model) to start out on that has enough power to get me ready for a higher end bike that isn't going to break the bank seeming as it will probably take a good beating. I would also like a street bike look to my "learning bike" so a cruiser is kind of out of the question.

Oh, and if anyone has a link to a site or thread on these forums with some good suggestions to gear that would be really helpful too.

Thanks.

Welcome to SBN first of all.

The most often recommended street bikes for new riders are the Kawasaki Ninja 250 or 500 plus the Suzuki GS500. All are bullet-proof and many are available used. Check out the stickies in this forum section.

There is also a Riders' Gear section with lots of info on what to wear and how to buy.

Start with the MSF course, ride safe and have fun.

Never out-ride your ability to react (even stop) within the distance you can see (at least on the street).
