Sportbike: don't want to jinx it
Six Degrees of Separation Sucks
You know the idea that we're all acquainted to each other by no more than six steps and you inevitably know someone in common and it's like wow, that's so weird that you know them. Well, that happened to me today at the most inopportune time. I went to one of the local Kawisaki dealerships to get the ball rolling on a new 250 R and wouldn't ya know it, the salesman knows a very good friend of mine. On top of it, the salesman's a super cool guy. Why is that bad? Well, I'm a bastard when it comes to buying large things where negotiating comes into play. When I bought my WRX, I had five dealerships in 4 states competing for my business. And I was a total bastard to the local guy, cuz I didn't care for him too much. Good for me. Now, since this guy knows a good friend of mine, I can't do any deal whoring cuz I'd feel like an a-hole. He said he could give me a good deal on gear, but I already have that covered with another acquaintance. Dang. Well, at least I'm giving business to a good guy and I'm not paying over MSRP. Just had to rant, because I'm thinking what the hell are the chances? Meh, so I don't save a hundred dollars or so, big deal...that's a little hard for me to swallow since I'm such a tightwad. Man, I'm getting into the wrong hobby.
Shiznit happens, oh well.
It'll save you some aggrevation of trying to hammer home a cheap deal I guess, if that makes any sense....
Congrats on getting the new bike though!

No bike dealer and no salesperson will sell you a bike at a price where they don't make money. Same is true of cars. Don't worry about it, but realize there isn't much profit in a 250 so don't expect a whole bunch off MSRP.

Never out-ride your ability to react (even stop) within the distance you can see (at least on the street).

No kidding. In NYS they even charge $40 for a lein fee... on a brand new, never registered bike. How the hell is there going to be a lein on a bike that's never been sold yet? WTF?

Yeah, you're right, but there's definitely room to throw a little something in if they have to in order to sway you from buying elsewhere. Like a pair of gloves, seat cowl, cheap helmet etc.

I beg to differ. I used to work @ a dealer. Occasionally you have to take a hit to get inventory off of the floor.
Agreed, though, theyre making so little off the bikes that youre not gonna get an amazing deal.

Dealerships have to keep the lights on too. make a deal that's fair for both of you and help keep your local dealership open. Also, if you don't bust him too bad on the deal, he'll be much more likely to cut you some slack on parts and accessories you need for your new bike.
