New Rider ForumsJust joining the motorcyclist hobbie? Looking to get some information about a first bike? Or have some newbie questions. Are you new to the website?
Because I took the MSF I knew to brake with the rear in a quick stop and to let off when it skidded. Had I not known that I would have probably done what most new riders do - grab the front and go over the bars.
Letting off the rear during a skid can result in going over the bars too. You're actually not supposed to do that.
nope, thats what my MSF course told me. if the rear locks up, keep steady pressure on it until complete stop. if the front brake locks up, thats when you should let off or you could be thrown over.
According to what I was told during the MSF:
If the rear locks up, if can get out of line from the direction of travel. If you then release the rear brake the rear will sudddenly snap back in line, potentially causing a high-side.
has anyone ever SEEN someone "go over the bars" from hitting the front brake??
im not talking about doing a stoppie either.
a highside is something completely different.
There's a video of - I want to say a 954, but maybe not. Some SS literbike... - out on a ride where the rider panicked at a grade change, grabbed a handful, and flipped the bike very fast and hard. Clearly not trying for a stoppie.

Sorry, I was asking of the OP.
I believe the way they put it in the book is that it's OK to release the rear brake if the wheels are aligned, but releasing it if they're out of alignment can result in a highside.

hmmm. I would like to see that. Ive locked the front wheel before and Ive had the rear tire lift, but Ive never even come close to going over the bars.

that is true....you have to be very aware of where your ass is when you lock up the rear....I have done it on slick roads, and had the back end come around, then it is a matter of feathering the brake to get minimal traction, to coax it back in line, or grabbing throttle to spin up the rear...either way it is a dicey move...and not a good beginner tool...
OP...glad you learned it well enough to do the right thing at the right time...
