New Rider ForumsJust joining the motorcyclist hobbie? Looking to get some information about a first bike? Or have some newbie questions. Are you new to the website?
So I finally cleared off the winter dust, and got my bike ready for spring, back it out of the garage and fire it up. A neighbor in the apartment comes out of his garage with a brand new V-star. He is a young guy, all fired up.
Says, nice bike....this is my first bike.....I look at it...all 600+ pounds of it.
He is sitting on it with the choke on idling for a while, no gear, sneakers, no helmet. I tell him it is a nice bike. He says he is teaching himself to ride. I ask him if he has signed up for the MSF.
He says yeah, I got it in 3 weeks. I have just been riding around the parking lot.
So I tell him not to take this the wrong way, but his best bet is to put the bike away until the class, and learn the basics on the smaller bikes, as learning on the large bike will end up being expensive.
He says, " well my dad and mom have been riding for years, and his dad said he should just putt around on it, and get the feel of it".
I said thats cool, but get a helmet, and some gloves, and boots. Slow speed crashes are just as bad as fast ones.
he says, "nah...my dad said this is ok". So I say good luck, if you need any help let me know. As he tries to ride off, stalling every 4 feet, and stiff legging the turns when he over balances.
It makes me wonder if this guys father is trying to make him a statistic?
Wow sounds like a great dad....I wish he was mine . I guess you can tell him when he drops it and has minor road rash to take the MSF again, then take his bike

You have to also realize that there's a generation gap and his fathers logic is completley different than the ones of todays adults. Back then, it was more acceptable not to use the proper riding gear, nor was gear as effective as it is today. So for his father to think, "Well I was fine when I was in my mid 20's, my son will be fine too" is all too common.
I think we just need to understand where his father is coming from before we jump to conclusions. But yeah, I get your point, some people you just can't convince to wear gear. Hell, I get laughed at a lot of the times when I'm in full gear. Especially by the squids on their 600 bikes; they look at me on my 250 and laugh because I'm in full gear.

Very true...I just wished him good luck.....
The funny thing that strikes me is that these kids think because their parents ride then they have automatic experience.
The only problem I can forsee is when he does drop/crash/ wreck the bike, I already know I am going to get the "Hey do you think you can help me fix it?" routine. And while I will help the kid out, I really hate seeing a good motorcycle all rashed and dented.
I dont know what they were thinking, not buying a used bike.
Hell I just dropped my 10 last night turning it around on dead tires and engine stall....but I know it was my mistake, no getting mad.
