Buy gear online or from a local shop?
This has to do with the purchasing of a helmet more then anything else. I know if you take basic measurements you are suppose to be able to size your self up for what kind of gear you need. But in the end is it still worth going to the local dealer and paying more just so you might be able to try the gear on before you buy it? Like I said this is referring mainly to buying a helmet.
That's one way but a lot of dealers have pretty good deals on helmets. Price them online and then try them at your dealer. If the shop is within 10 percent, buy it there. The last thing we want to do is run all the shops out of business - its nice to have someplace where you can actually get some in-person service.
If you aren't getting decent service from your shop, by the way, then all bets are off.

+1 my dealer is great, so i have tough time buying on-line, unless its a $800 suite for $500.
Support your local bike shop and your local economy! That is, unless they're totally gouging you on their prices. Local shops only exist by making money, and they only make money when they sell their merchandise. Sometimes the price for necessary convenience is worth it. It really shouldn't be that much more anyway, once you figure in shipping+handling, time waited for delivery, etc.
I'm not against purchasing stuff from the internet. Some things are just better purchased locally.
It's tough out here in Hawaii. All the local store's prices are inflated by 10% - 25% above the online retailers - but with the online guys you have to figure in the shipping. I always try to support the local guys, but it can be tough on the wallet sometimes...
As for gear, being a noob to all of this - I went to the local stores. They have more experience with Fit than I do and were a lot of help. Plus, sizes on motorcycle jackets are all over the place. I tried on Larges that should be XXL, and vice versa...
+1 on the comment about it depends on your relationship with the local shop. My locals guys are expensive but they're good people. Every time I go in there they give me 10-20% off sticker price without my asking. Plus they give me good advice. Also, gear is one thing which needs to fit right. So I'd want to put it on before I buy.

I went local and tired on like 3 or 4 jackets. Then went on line to compare. I found my jacket online for $105 cheaper than in my local shop. Just happened that it went on sale/clearance as SandhillsPowerSports.com that week. Otherwise with shipping most sites were about the same.
