New Rider ForumsJust joining the motorcyclist hobbie? Looking to get some information about a first bike? Or have some newbie questions. Are you new to the website?
Hey guys, Im new here. Dont have a bike yet, but I really want a Triumph Daytona 675 Triple. I'll probably start off with a Honda CBR600 though. Any advice for a newb?
There are some tacked threads about why you shouldn't buy a 600 SS bike for your first.
You are going to get flamed royally for wanting to start off on more bike than you should. I won't go there, but others will. Try to have a thick skin, you can learn a lot here. There's been a couple guys lately that started on 600SS's and are now the 1st to admit they shouldn't have.
My BIL started on a Honda 600F2 and he dropped it several times, then went down in a corner and did like $3k in damage, because it was too much bike for a new rider.
Basic advice will be:
1. Read the tacked threads for newbs
2. take the MSF Course - Motorcycle Safety Foundation Course
3. Buy a used 250, since it's probable that you will drop it a few times, so it's cheaper to fix and a more managable bike
4. get some experience under your belt, when the bike is holding you back, upgrade
I should clarify a few things. I WILL NEVER ride without gear on, I wont ride before I take a course, I wont ride much until I've finished a second course.
The reason I might start on a 600 is that im about 6'5-6'6 325. I doubt a 250 would fit me at all, a CBR600 was a tad small; but I'll definately look around. I dont want a powerful bike (I cant even believe I said that), I just want something to ride to classes and back most days. I'll probably get something that's 5+ years old, not something brand new, because as that old saying goes "its not if you crash, but when" I know that, and I understand the dangers. When we take our drag car to the strip, it always amazes (and scares) me to see how fast these bikes will go. That's nuts, it's scary to do 120 in a car with a full cage, helmet, and a safety harness on.

try peaking at the ground next to you going 130, its like shit i am 6 inches above it.
your sixe argument is really not one for justification, yes you will look like an ape on a big wheel, but thats how it will be on all sportbikes, the reasoning for starting small is so you get the experience of riding w/o touchy controls.

Your size defense is unfounded. Supersport bikes have aggressive seating positions that typically are not comfortable, especially for someone your size. You will probably find a GS500 or EX500 more comfortable. This will be your first bike, not your last.
Engine size IS NOT related in any way to physical bike size. 600s/1000s are typically designed for people under 6 feet tall.
ok, i'll look into the smaller ones...how are these bikes' engines tuned? Can you do it like in a car, and just adjust the computer to give you more or less power?
At your size an SV650 would be a good bike for you. Full sized with more room than the CBR. I recommend the naked version, but you would be well served on either. It is what I started on, and to be honest, was more bike than I should have had to start. However, at your size, I think it would be a great compromise between good starter bike and not looking like you escaped from a circus.
And take the next MSF class available, don't worry about getting the bike first, less temptation down the road.
