Default Few questions.

I am planning on getting the gs500f for my first bike and i've been looking around craigslist lately (good idea?)
Would it be ok to get a bike with some cosmetic damage? Ive been hearing about how these bikes are "bulletproof" and such, and im getting to believe that there has to be a missing engine for these things not to run. haha.

I plan on bringing someone with me to check all the stuff on the bike.

Lol, its funny that all my friends that i know keep telling me to get a 600.
While i keep telling them to F off, im not you.
haha

so back to my question.
Cosmetic damage = O.K? ( Because i would probably cause some to it as well)

Many a good deal can be had because of cosmetics, some people look for a bike as a project.

One of the main things to stay clear of is a bike that has gone end over end, a track bike or a stunt bike would easily fall into this catagory.

Cosmetic damage is no big deal if you can cope with it. Just make sure it's purely cosmetic and that all the mechanical bits are in order. See the link for new riders in my sig, there's a section on what to look for.
