Default New Rider

Hey my name is Ethan. I'm going to be a new rider and I am going to take all the classes necessary to make me the safest and smartest rider i can be. But whats a rider without a bike . I'm 6'6" 265lb and I've been reading that being big really makes no difference. But i'm not looking for a 600cc or anything like that. Just a bigger(idk if i need a bigger one or not) bike around 350-400cc. I've ridden dirt bikes but in no way am i assuming street bikes and dirt bikes are the same thing. They are whole separate worlds. So the point of this thread is to see what bikes are out there and such. Any recommendations for a new rider. I saw the 250 ninja in person and i sat on it and it feels way to small.

Thanks!
-Ethan

This:

Kawasaki KLR650

Big, friendly dual sport thumper. This bike will NOT feel small to you.

Mkay, well, better just get used to the idea of feeling like a circus elephant on a bicycle then. All sportbikes are tiny, until you start talking about the big GTs like the Hayabusa, ZX-14, CBR1100XX, and ZZR1200, *none* of which are even remotely appropriate for a new rider.

How about this:

Kawasaki 650R

Parallel twin 650, standard ergos. Smaller than a KLR, but not tiny like a supersport. Marginally acceptable for a first bike, you really don't want anything more powerful than this.

Yeah the new 250 is sexy, and it'll carry you just fine if you learn to deal with the size. But don't get too wrapped up in looks - this should not be your most important criteria. We're talking about your first bike here, not your last, and all that plastic on sportbikes is expensive to replace.

You could also start on a midsize cruiser. Physically huge and accomodating for a big guy. Low and stable, doesn't get hurt when you drop it, and very forgiving controls. Great to learn on.

Browse cycletrader.com, ebay, and whatever local listings you might have in your area to get an idea of what folks are asking. I'm guessing around $4500 for a nice used one. MSRP new is $6500.
