New Rider ForumsJust joining the motorcyclist hobbie? Looking to get some information about a first bike? Or have some newbie questions. Are you new to the website?
New guys,
I don't care if you are McLarens test driver or the Stig.
A high hp car isn't a bike and a bike isn't a high hp car!
There is a thing called stability!
And contact patch!
And safety!
What happens if you rev up your sooped up Civic and dump your slush box into D?
Oh yeah the front wheels spin and spin and you pull away while giving your friends in the burbs gang signs.
Ok say you get on my older than dirt 1100 GPZ and you rev the engine to say oh....8k rpm and then drop the clutch?
Well you'll have a hard time explaining how a 1996 1100 GPZ was inserted into your ass!
Next you come too hot in to a corner in your suped up Tiburon, she'll push a little and you let off on the gas and she will stabilize and you will go around the corner while flashing gang signs at the soccer moms.
Ok now say you are on a nice 250cc and you come into the wall mart off ramp a little too fast, you panic maybe grab a bit of too much rear brake, the rear wheel locks up and you high side over the soccer moms while flipping the soccer moms gang signs.
Ok I know what you are thinking! Shah foshiz my hizza! I aint gonza be doing no side burns and no off ramps yo! I'za straight and narrow kindza guy!
Ok say you are coming to an intersection for some odd reason the light changes quickly or some one pulls out in front of you while you are chilling in your moms Volvo listening to oh....I don't know Yanni getting your groove on! You panic slam on the brake the front tires skid the ABS kicks in and you come to a stop while giving the soccer mom in the mini van next to you gang signs.
Now on the bike....well this is more complicated. Lock up the rears and then let go and you high side clear over the mini van carrying the soccer mom you are giving gang signs to. Too much front and well...either the bike will throw your ass off the front of the bike, again with the gang signs or she just lock up and wash out or stoppy and bring the bike over on to you.
So do us all a huge favor. Yes we know you drive a sooped up Cabriolet and we can care less. Because it doesn't mean squat when dealing with bikes.
It's like comparing a train to a plane. Just because you are an engineer on Amtrak doesn't mean you can land a 777!
Ok!
Thank you Shah! I have the same thoughts every time some nub comes in here talking about their experience with some powerful cage.
I don't care what it is or how much HP it has...
Car experience is irrelevant
...when it comes to motorcycles, and trying to justify a high-hp sportbike.
You may as well tell us about your lawnmower, or toaster, or hair dryer.
The only thing applicable to motorcycles from car experience is basic understanding of how traffic works. I think driving a stick vs. slushbox also helps a new rider a bit, because you at least have an understanding of the concept of a clutch.
But you can get this from your mom's Subaru. Your 600 hp vette or stang mean nothing in the world of sportbikes. Got that? NOTHING.
Driving and maintaining a high HP car require at least basic mechanical comprehension, decent coordination and reflexes. These things help smooth out the learning curve… although not enough to jump right onto an SS safely.

I'm going to say that driving a high HP car means nothing when it comes to bikes. The mechanics of how you operate both are too different to say operating one will help you at operating the other.

Can you sip on a Blander Buster from 7-11 while driving a high HP car?
Yes.
Can you even think about sipping a Blader Buster from 7-11 while riding any thing on two wheels at speed? I don't think so.
