Time.

You're gonna get that 500, and you're going to go out and take a MSF course. At the end of that course, you ain't gonna know shit, but you're going to ride around for a few months practicing what you learned, and you'll get pretty proficient at navigating around, and not violating the two rules of motorcycle survival (those being "don't run into shit" and "don't let shit run into you").

Five or six months, you might actually be pretty good at it. You might come to think that you're ready for that liter bike, or hypersport 600, and that little 500 isn't doing it for you any more.

You are, at that point, as dangerous on a bike as you will ever be. It is at that point you should re-evaluate, and take extra special care that you are not becoming complacent.

Give yourself another six or eight months and use that time to really focus on improving your ridership.

Then go get the GSX-R.

Mighty fine advice. We've all seen this scenario played out too many times. Rookie overconfidence can be a killer. Patience is a virtue. Enjoy the ride. Keep the rubber side down.

Well, here is the counterpoint argument. There is a reason so many Gixxers are on the track. They have been crashed. So, buy a Gixxer, crash it, and then sell me the salvage rights real cheap. My race bike is a 2004, and the newer ones are faster.
