I sat on a GSX650F yesterday in Daytona. I wasn't that impressed with it as a beginner bike. Perhaps for someone who has at least a little prior experience of some type (dirt, or coming from cruisers maybe), but for someone with zero experience I would think it would be a little intimidating. It's kind of top-heavy. Didn't seem like it would be easy for a no-experience-new rider to maneuver.

Then again, I sat on the Ninja 250 about 10 minutes before, so perhaps I was comparing it to that, which felt like a bicycle.

Good post!

That was my R1 that Silent desomated. It was about the easiest big bike to ride fast too revalved shock and forks and flat as a ruler power band. I love her but I still haven't forgiven her. I never will that bike was my baby.

All that was needed was a little more experience and it would have ben noting to get through that corner at that speed.

Other things I advise- get gear that lasts or you will be replacing it in a month.

Get comfortable gear, if it doesn't fit you wont wear it.

Never break in a fast corner unless you want to run off the road. Those cute mid corner corrections are 100 times more dangerous than just riding it out. See Reasons to start small

That racing boot might look funny on the street but it looks worlds better than those pink casts they put on at the orthopedic surgeons office.

Trust me you dont need a big bike to go fast.

I haven't had the chance to sit on or test one. I would like to, but the local Suzuki dealership is anal about sitting on bikes, let alone test-rides.

If it's anything at all like the Katana that it replaces, it stays on my second-or-third-bike list. The Kat is infamous for being topheavy, and it gets worse when you stack 75lbs of luggage on top of it.

Add to that the characteristics of an I4 and it just reinforces my point.

SilentR1, I remember reading that thread several times. You seemed to have recovered pretty well.

Great post Bush.

I wish I had read this before I bought my FZ6.(new)
I thought dirt bike experience as a kid was good enough.
I thought my old 1967 305cc Honda Scrambler in high school was enough.
I thought a nice little 600cc starter bike was fine.

Sure I took the MSF course... Just to brush up

These modern bikes are a lot to manage.

After 7,000 miles on the FZ6 and 1,200 miles on a SV1000S I am still a noob.

Don't hold the bars too tight.
You can counter steer.
Steer with your knees, foot pegs or lean.
Do you have pressure on the outside peg... or inside peg?
Where is your butt in the seat?
Where is your upper body weight?
Look were you want to go. (Easier said than done)
Establish your speed BEFORE you enter the corner.
What RPM's are you at?(can you say "power band"?)
Throttle out after you see your exit.
These bikes can corner much better than we can. (most of us) If we don't mess it up.
Your body weight is part of the suspension... not the frame.

Now put all that together in a continuosly variable problem that is moving at 100' per second... and can LAUNCH hard from that speed!

I could have had a lot of fun with a Ninja 500.

Again. Great post. You may not type it in 400 times... Just maybe link it 400 times

Hey Bush, very informative post! I have been searching online for a while and found yours to be the best. Now I'm off to MSF first, then call State Farm for quotes, visit some dealers for reference, and so on!

Thanks

Thanks for all the info Bush. I'm a new rider and just recently purchased a cbr600rr over 3 months ago and till now felt it was too much bike for the lack of experience I have and I don't ride too often........I just put in an order for a 08 Ninjette....my cbr can wait a little.
