Question Trouble shifting past 3rd gear

I'm not sure if it's just me or if it's the bike but i seem to be having problems shifting past 3rd. I just got this bike (01 ZX6-R) and i'm also new to streetbikes. I think it might be me cause i remember having problems shifting when i rode a dirt bike a year ago. I can shift from 1st to 2nd to 3rd and sometimes i have problems going past 3rd. I was only going around the neighborhood so i wasn't going any faster then 30-45mph. Do i need to be going faster for me to get it past 3rd easier? I can downshift no problem all day, I'm wondering if it's me or the bike.

Actually i think i figured out what the problem is, i just took a close look at the gear shifter lever and it's kinda loose cause the left foot rest is loose and the metal braket (part # 35011-1874) is cracked from the previous owner laying the bike down. Is this a easy fix? And where can i find this part for cheap, the cheapest i found is at Ron Ayers Motorsports - Motorcycle, ATV, Jet Ski and Generators Parts and Accessories for 57 bucks.

my girlfriend's 03 zx-6r would not go above 3rd when she got it. The shift linkage was loose and had been put together wrong.

We corrected it and it has worked perfectly ever since.

well it's either that or i noticed the other night that the starter motor wasn't working and it took me pull the clutch all the way to the bar instead of using the index, middle finger to pull it, i'm thinking i might just need a clutch adjustemnet, hopefully

problem solved! it took me taking the left footrest off to notice that the gearshifter had gotten stuck on the peg and each down and up shift was rocking the peg back and forth therefore making it loose. simply adding lubrication to the peg/gearshifter assembly and torquing the bolt for the peg fixed it. Kevinwilly was partially correct cause of the loosened footrest.

How do you even reach the shifter? If I were you I would stick to hobbies you can excel at, like fetch, or butt licking.

Seeing how no one enjoy's the pic of my wolf/husky being placed on my bike after a few days of him trying to get up there on his own and a couple of drunk friend putting him on there and giving me the pictures, i've changed the pic. Now you can see how my foot can reach the "shifter". I never imagined a prank photo would cause so many asses to come out the woodwork and talk shit. Hey, whatever floats your boat. You know there's two types of people that write on forums.

-AND-
2) the kind that for some reason find it helpfully to post rude and unhelpfull comments.

I'm sure it was more of a jest than anything intentionally harmful. Zx is never intentionally a jerk ;)

On that note, let's keep it topic related Zx :p

Good job on the self fix! Any kind of write-up (possibly with pictures) that you can do and post in the fix it forum or the article write up form would be awesome. I know they aren't easy to do, so if you can't, I understand... but I'm sure if you did it would help others out in the future.
