New Rider ForumsJust joining the motorcyclist hobbie? Looking to get some information about a first bike? Or have some newbie questions. Are you new to the website?
do you guys think it's a good idea to buy older bikes aka ones from the 90's (1993-1999)?
if you think about it, a bike from '94 is 14 years old.
more specificially, are cbr's from the 90's reliable and would you recommend buying one or would you stay as far away as possible? I'm a new rider as most of you know and there have been some great deals on bikes from '94

I had one of those, too...A 1994 F2...Another bike I'm sorry I got rid of...Great bike...
Check the history of that bike (or any bike for that matter)...If it's in good shape, I'd take it...
The fairing will be the most expensive thing...The foot peg and shield are about $50 a piece...
yeah, i'm hoping the fairing damage isn't enough to make me cringe every time i see the bike.
are the foot pegs and windshield hard to replace? i hope it's an easy fix...

How many miles on that thing? Yeah, check the history as much as you can. See if dude man has service records (probably not). F2's are reliable, save the R/R. I'd say at least look into it...

regulator/rectifier. They are notorious for being sh*tty on mid 90's Hondas. Cheap fix overall. To answer your original question, I would not hesitate to buy another 90's Honda. Great bikes.

see if you can take her for a test ride. i know a few(just a few) f2's that have have bogg issues that even a mechanic(airplane and bike) could'nt even fix. not to say that hondas are unreliable because they are(some cat on here logged over 100,000 on his f4i). just make sure to go through it.
I'm not feeling it. Sorry, but a buddist in the family doesn't make you open-minded. It just means you're bangin' a buddist.

bog? what are the symptoms of that issue?
can i just have the owner ride it around and still detect the problem?

Older bikes can be great. Buy the mid 80s most bikes were fairly modern and reliable, by the 90s they were even better than that. A lot of the equipment (brakes etc) on the top end bikes from the 90s is still used on the mid and lower price bikes bikes today.
Of course, cutting edge sportbikes have improved in a lot of ways over the past couple of decades and you can certainly see that when you read the modern vs retro comparison tests magazines occasionally do. However, it's important to remember that they do those tests on race tracks with professional riders and that out in the real world, the gains in performance are usually negated by a rider's inability to use all 100 percent of his bike's inherent ability. So, an average guy who in 1994 might have been able to use 70 percent of his GSXR1100's ability, can now, thanks to the constant improvements the designers have thought up, only use 60 percent of his GSXR1000's ability.
Thing is, just because a bike is from the 90s doesn't mean it is automatically suitable for beginners. SS bikes from back in the day can bite a new rider the same way a modern SS can. So, in my mind, the same warnings always apply. Start small and work your way up.
