New Rider ForumsJust joining the motorcyclist hobbie? Looking to get some information about a first bike? Or have some newbie questions. Are you new to the website?
I've been wanting a bike for quite the amount of time now and I've gotten to the point where I'm willing to sell my shit car for what it's worth ($700-$1000) and grab a decent running bike.
You see I'm unemployed and therefore have no extra money to throw at getting a bike so I will have to make do with what I can get, I basically want anything besides a cruiser type bike, I hate the seating position, I could make do with a position such as any SS bike or that of a standard like a ninja 250 or a ducati monster.
anywho, my question is, could I find something halfway decent to use as my sole form of transportation for around a grand tops? maybe even as low as 700 bucks 0_0
I'd love a ninja 250, I am 5, 11 230 pounds but I figure it'd still be plenty quick
any help would be nice, the cheaper the better though because I still have to buy gear -_- I'd like to have it all, jacket, pants, boots, gloves, helmet, the works, but I'll probably only be able to afford a jacket and helmet for the time being.
I'm trying my hardest to find a friggin job in this shit town, it's one of those small towns where it's next to impossible to get any form of work unless you kiss ass like no tomorrow or simply "know people". When I wake up I'm actually going to the Honda and Nissan dealerships to apply for a detailing position, which I happen to be very good at.
Well... besides getting a job. It looks like you might have to buy a junk bike, and fix it up.
Ducatis a EXPENSIVE not just to buy, but to insure. To get a Ducati that is $1000 or less. It would be just a frame and wheels almost.
Really... in the long run, keep the car. Cars are cheaper than motorcylces... The real only thing a motorcycle is cheap at, is gas.
Start small get a used 250.
No, I meant a riding position like that of the monster 695 or ninja 250 lol
I want to get an old 250 if I can find one but I was wondering if they've even been heard of for about a grand? I just came across a 1995 for about $1500.
Possible yes. Easy no. My first bike was a '91 EX500 (still have it) that a paid a grand for. Was ready to go, no maintenance needed. E-bay. It's a little rare to find a bike for a grand that doesn't require any work.

i think you should def be able to find a 250 for $1000 them bitches are cheap and popular. but hopefully you can do your own maintenance cause there will probably be some little things wrong with anything you get cheap.
+1 on keeping the car though even if it is shitty it will keep you dry and haul more shit. I would say at least keep it till you find a job.

I'll just give it untill I get a job then get rid of the car and get a bike in nicer condition, btw, I'm not going to keep a car just for the sake of staying dry lol, I'll ride that shit rain or shine. all I need is a backpack for groceries and such, don't need a car for my lifestyle.
good call on waiting man but there's alot more to riding in the rain than getting soaked...you gotta factor in the greater ease of losing traction and the fact that the slightest bit of rain turns a bad driver into a retard. being in florida i'm sure you've seen plenty of bad drivers to boot!

If you only have $700-$1000, you should wait. If you try to get a bike and gear for $1000, you'll end up with a POS bike that constantly gives you problems (likely), and cheap gear (assuming you can even get any after the MC purchase) that won't give you adequate protection.

great place to start looking is craigslist.com for your area. There are good deals on there... but for the price you are talking about you are likely going to find an older bike that's going to need some work.

I think you are looking for trouble. The truth is you need gear and even if you go cheap and leave a lot of the pieces out, it is still likely to cost more than $200.
That leaves you looking for an $800 bike. There are bikes in that price range out there but they usually need work. Even if you are a super mechanic you still have to pay for parts.
Save up at least $2000 for bike, gear, and insurance.
Motorcycles are not for the poor man.
+1
and thats not even including being a track junkie
