New Rider ForumsJust joining the motorcyclist hobbie? Looking to get some information about a first bike? Or have some newbie questions. Are you new to the website?
im a 13 year old male(140 lbs)ganna get license at 14....im ganna try to get some good experience before i do but im wondering if a ninja 500 is to much for a starter......also:have any of you guys gotten a 500 or higher as 1st bike?
Now for a serious question: What should I expect a used Ninja 500 to cost me? It isn't for me since I'm not even in the country, but a buddy is leaving the island for Texas and is convinced he wants a used Ninja 500. He hasn't taken the MSF yet, but this guy is so stubborn it annoys me.

learners permits, and yes, even basic licensing can happen that young. State rules and laws vary. My very first bike was a gsxr600 that I was gifted by someone. Shortly there after I traded it to a friend for a 250 and some cash... it was too much bike for me.

I think that you are going to be told by most people here to drive a car first, and I agree. A car provides a buffer zone of safety for you to learn how to navigate traffic and bad/inattentive drivers. Ride dirt until you are 17 or 18 (couple years of driving), then get a road bike.
I've been rear-ended twice--in a parking lot, and at a stoplight-- and very nearly been sideswiped more times than I can count. Learn to deal with that kind of stuff before you add more variables into the equation.
Hopefully you are mature enough to listen to good advice, because I sure as hell wasn't when I was 13-14. Lucky for me I wasn't able to buy a motorcycle at that point.

Absolutely. Without the experience, youre not going to have the situational awareness and instincts that are 3x as difficult and important compared to a car. I'd hate to see another teenager in an accident, we've had a rash of young sportbikers in fatal collisions around my area..

at your age, with your interest, you might wanna check out motocross and dirtbike tracks and associations in your area. might be a great way to learn about motorcycles, and get to play with them on a track in a safe setting.
i'm pretty sure most motorcycle safety courses have a min. age requirement.
plenty of people have started on bikes bigger than 500cc. the reason it's not highly recommended is because there are greater consequences for mistakes on a larger displacement bikes. the ninja 500 is a good start IMO.

Um, I am all for riding young but I think you should drive a car to used o the rules of the road and see how crazy people are on the street. When your 17, you should have enough money saved to buy a 250. Take the MSF, get good gear, absorb all of the information you can from the board, and take it slow.
That is just my opinion.
