A bike that big is generally regarded as a bike for experienced riders. This best place for you to begin is with the stickies at the top of this forum.

You will find that the members of this site almost always recommend starting small, taking a motorcycle safety foundation beginning rider's course, gaining experience over time and only moving up to one of the more powerful bikes after a couple of seasons.

well i read that am i'm not really understanding the reason for not getting a bike that big. don't get me wrong, i'm no idiot, and i'm not going to get a 1000 or 996 or something crazy like that. but i do understand that the margin for error gets smaller as you go bigger. but the smallest of bikes that i know of is the 250 and the next bike i've been able to find (in a decent working order) are the 600 and 750s. i'm in no rush to get a bike or get my "riders deploma".
i know riding is risky, and that's something everyone on this forum has come to terms with.

For starters, the power to weight ratio on bikes is way higher than cars. A new 600cc ss bike has about 120 hp at the rear wheel, a 750 even more (140 maybe by now?). At about 450 lbs wet, that puts these bikes in super-car territory. It's just too easy for 0-60 in 3 seconds to become 0-dead in 10 seconds.

A 250 or 500 or 650 twin would be a much better choice with the 650 being marginal. Even a 250 will win a race with almost any "normal" car on the road. Add to all this learning to control the bike and react in traffic on a bike where half the other drivers don't see you and you have a basic idea.

Start with the msf course and take it from there.

My almost 10 year old gsxr-600 will out run a 2007 viper srt10 from a dead stop to over 100mph (first hand experiences ). How fast do you think a 750 is? Are you really naive enough to assume its a good bike to start on?

well i tried out the 750 and a 600. i didn't like the 750 at all. it felt like it had too much torque. i liked the ride and accel of the 600 better. also i found one with-in my price range too. and i gave it some thought also. when i get my bike it's just going to be out to ride and have fun. speed is not a HIGH factor to me. (Spirited riding, check. there's no need to go plaid)

You'll find the 600 has a crazy amount of power higher in the rev band - if you didn't find it on your test ride you weren't revving it right. I'd advise you to look a little lower in the CC range, if you want to grow your skills and have a lot of fun, smaller bikes will serve you better at this stage.
