New Rider ForumsJust joining the motorcyclist hobbie? Looking to get some information about a first bike? Or have some newbie questions. Are you new to the website?
So I was looking at older Kawasaki 250s and just wasn't gettin all that excited about them, so I decided to look up the 08 model and wow my junk started to tingle! This will be my first bike and I know buying a brand new bike is stupid for a beginner, but come on it's still a 250 like you guys recommend. So my question is why shouldn't I get a brand new Kawi 250r (Red or Green) besides the fact that I may drop it.

Well, the theory behind the 250 is that you are teaching yourself proper riding techniques, learning from mistakes, and generally using the bike to gain skill...
Ask yourself, do you really want to do that on a brand new 250?
just get it and ride the snot out of it. sure you may drop it... but you might not. if you love the new one you will not be as excited about the old one if you buy it and will want to upgrade sooner... maybe too sooner.

I know a guy who took the side plastics and nose off, and wired up a light to his forks and put some sliders on his bike so that he wouldn't scratch them up while he was learning and practicing.
Not saying you should try it... just that you could.

Because you'll be so concerned about NOT dropping it that you'll avoid the very situations you need to practice.

The answer to that ^^^ is to bring it home and then kick it over on the driveway and get the drop out of the way so you can move on to really learning.

or if you do get into situations you'll act in the best interest of preserving the bike, rather than practicing good emergency techniques...
if it adds any extra stress (be it good or bad), it's probably not as helpful in a learning condition.
it's good that it's a 250, but it's bad that:
a) it's brand new so it might not have the reliability of the old one, though that remains to be seen
b) it'll be super expensive to repair plastics
c) it'll make you less likely to take it out if you're scared something will happen to it
d) it'll make you more likely to do something bad because it's possible you'll be concerned about not wanting to fuck it up

Get the new Kawi if you must. You seem to intellectually understand the right thing to do. Now get your emotions in check. If you must get the new one, get red and not green.

Never out-ride your ability to react (even stop) within the distance you can see (at least on the street).
if you get the 08, ride it like your would ride a old one. if you like the exp of being on a bike, this will be your first bike not your last. you get the 08, have a newb moment and forget to put a foot down. tip it over. crack a few pieces of your shiny new bike. when you go to sell it when you upgrade. pretty sure someone wouldn't mind buying it off your for a track bike or just want it to learn themself.
in the end you'll get whatever bike you want. just don't over think it, and pay attention to what you need to learn. proper riding tech.
mods....GT501 tires, SV650 shock, dinojet kit, K&N filter, Flushmounts, fender elimin. with rear signals relocated in pods, Two Brother's. Soon to be done, sonic springs
