Default can't shift up nor down when in N when coasting

hi i think i was about 60km/hr when i saw traffic ahead was slowing down so I geared down to N to give my left hand a rest. then traffic picked up and i was about 40-50km/hr so i tried to shift up but there was some sort of resistance in the gear lever. i tried a tad harder and i could hear the chains make a grinding sound. immediately i stopped trying to shift then once i was down to about 20km/hr i could shift.

what's going on? thanks.

I have to agree with iam...Never, on purpose, shift into neutral while riding...

If you do, slow down and blip the throttle to get in back into 2nd gear...

coasting in neutral would make it a lot harder for you to evade any nearby car/danger

the reason you cant do it is because motorcycles have constant mesh transmissions. when you put it in neutral, the shafts are still spinning but the gears arent dogged into eachother. so whats happening is you are trying to force one gear going engine speed into another thats not..... so instead of going straight to neutral, downshift normally until your sure your gonna sit. then shift into neutral.

You should always keep it in gear incase you need to get out of the semis way that is barreling down on you because the driver isn't paying attention. It could save your life.

I always thought shifting into a higher gear was better - to prevent the rear tire from locking...(someone tell me if that's wrong)

He said 2nd because thats just one click up and will rev match easier and smoother than having to slow down enough to click into 1st gear without locking up the rear tire.

What would you do? shift into 3rd or 4th from neutral? lol

No, of course not. Yes i would shift into a higher gear, so in this case second. But there are other cases that may arise where you might be in third gear, let's say (like entering a turn and clutching in because of a stupid newb mistake) and some people may not realize that they would have to shift into a higher gear so they dont lock the rear brake.

When you are in neutral you are helpless. A lot of people even advocate not being in neutral stopped at a light, until there is a car stopped behind you.

Im always in gear unless Im at a light that I know is long. Otherwise holding the clutch in for 30-60 seconds isn't that big of a deal.

Touching on another point - what do you mean "giving your left hand a rest"? The implication is that before you were in neutral, you were holding the clutch in for extended periods, and that doesn't make sense either. Describe the situation and let's fix the root cause.
