gs500e
I never considered buying a GS500E because I didn't like the non-sportsbike look, but I'm getting pretty used to it. They're also pretty cheap and abundant. I was wondering, since it doesn't have a windshield, how does it ride on freeways? Should I buy a windshield if I plan on commuting a lot?

I'd look into a mini-fairing for it. I'm sure someone makes one. I had a naked sv650 for a while. At speeds over about 50 it became too much after a while. A Targa fairing fixed that.

You might want to check out some of the National Cycle windscreens. My SO has the F-15 windscreen. Very happy with it.
Freeway tested without any problems on a 60 mile (rt) commute daily. Had a local shop order it and we paid about $90 for it. Great investment. Easy install.

Thanks for the windshield link.
Would 25k miles be too much for a 2001? I'm thinking as long as it has been maintained properly, it can go for a lot longer.

Don't worry about it at all, if it's been maintained properly. There is a guy on this board (GSJack) has something like 4 times that mileage on a gs! They're very easy to work and find parts for.

Try it out before you buy the windscreen.
For some people, the wind is fine. A friend of mine cannot ride without some kind of fairing or windshield, but I can't even really notice the difference.
So it kind of depends on the person.

I've got a gs500e and have been riding it for the past couple of weeks since I finished my MSF. I took it on the interstate for the first time this weekend and was cruising around 70mph most of the time and the wind did seem pretty bad. Then I just rode backroads doing between 60-70 and it didn't bother me at all. I don't know if I got used to it or what. I would just suggest riding without a windshield and if it bothers you, you can pick one up.

Let me pre-welcome you to the GS500e family
It really depends on how much the wind bothers you at speed. I do about 10 out of my 50 mile commute on the highway at 80+ mph, so for me, the windscreen was totally worth it. There are a lot of different options, head on over www.gstwins.com for a lot of ideas and help on the GS

On a fairly calm day, anything above 80 generally bothers me. But sometimes you just gotta man up, and rip through the wind at 120 mph.

The 500 couldn't hit 120 even if it wanted to.

Mi first bike was a 1989 gs500e. It was really sucked on the fwy at first. I got used to it really quick, I had to. I rode it daily to work and back for a year, 150 miles daily. Good luck and have fun.

Yes it can...you just need a very long rode. It should top around 120-122mph, but honestly why would you ever need to go that fast unless you're on the track?

+1 I have the National Cycle F-16 Sport Shield on my Bandit, I really like it...helps alot on the highway. Mind you, anything above 70mph is still super windy for me, so I usually dont go faster than that.
