Default Helmet Sizing

Hi all,

Just last weekend I completed my MSF and decided its time for me to start looking at gear! I went to a local shop to try on some shoei helmets, and found myself between a medium and large. The medium felt great except for some slight pressure on my forehead. I'm worried that when riding long distances this will really start to hurt and become unbearable (I only walked around in it for about 20 minutes).

I then tried on a a large, which felt great around that area but a little loose around the sides of my head (cheek area). The helmet could rock slightly and roll forward slightly, but not much, and couldn't roll off my head. My question is: would the large size be OK, and safe? Is there anyway I can increase the padding in certain areas to optimize the fit?

Best regards,
Greg

Any advice guys? Are there ways to increase padding in certain areas?

try a diffrent brand or model in the medium. i dont know of a safe way to add padding to a helmet. you never want to modify a helmet

I tried on an a couple of Arai's too, but didn't like the feeling of either the medium or large since I could feel a band of pressure around my forehead.

I think the shoei would be a good choice, but still worried that the medium is a little too tight. Will this break in with time?

In the case of the large, I thought the helmets had replaceable cheek pads? Is it a bad idea to change these?

You're right about being too tight on your head-you'll be miserable after a while. The large sounds like it would work if you got different cheek pads, which most manufacturers offer.
