insurance on kawi 250 or 500?
i am totally new to the sportbike scene, passed the MSF beginner course and have my motorcycle license. i would love to own a buell firebolt xb12r but i'm pretty sure that's too much bike for me to start with. so, i'm looking at a kawi 250r or a 500r to ride for a few seasons to get uber comfortable on a bike. however, i am not sure how much insurance would be for either bike. im 21 with no major infractions on my record, only one speeding ticket from '06 11-19 mph over the limit. any thoughts on how much insurance would run me per month or per year? i appreciate all the advice/help given!

the 250 will be less than the 500 and both will be much less than the 1200.
really it will depend on the company you call, your state, and a few other things. i'd call a few places and have them run a quote.

I just got a Ninja 250 insured in downstate IL (college town) for $300/year. Have everything except for collision insurance.
Check out Progressive.com; they tend to have reasonable rates. Your rate may be higher because you have a ticket on your record. You can also pay it as twelve monthly installments, with the option to cancel at any time.
You don't live in Texas, but if you did I'd say "god help you". Currently, the insurance companies are giving gross amounts of money to politicians to let them keep charging insane amounts for insurance. I have a perfect record and I was quoted $600/6 months.

i'm from MA and my old '93 kat 750 (huge hulker of a thing at 461lbs dry) was only $270/yr after the MSF 10% discount... i have a relatively clean driving record with one ticket, and i think i was 18 (possibly 19) when i insured it
I am currently paying $127 annually for a 2002 Kawasaki Ninja 250 with 100k limits excluding comprehensive and collision coverage. (The policy covers two drivers on the bike). Rollerchicken, I am really interested in knowing more about your policy because I would like to have my bikes covered for collision & comprehensive as well. Your rate seems really low.

well, you are younger and have a brand new bike. That may be it.

For me, my insurance has a $100K limit. I really wouldn't recommend going any lower than that- either in a car or on a bike.
Full coverage means everything, collision, uninsured motorist, theft, etc.

You also have to remember, Rollerchicken is 27 and doesn't have a brand new bike.
Check out state farm. When I had my 06 600rr (last year) I had full coverage, with my parent's insurance (car, house, etc.) and i paid roughly $300 a year for full coverage.
Check out AAA, that's who i have now. With my 03 RC, I am paying $900 a year for full coverage, but that's only because I have a point on my record. If not, it would have been $400 a year. I just turned 23 and am riding a 1000cc. Might want to check it out.

I'm 25, with no tickets since '01, had my lisence for almost 3 years. When the 500 was my only bike I was paying Geico under 200 a year for liability only. Now that it's my second bike I'm paying a whopping $28 a YEAR. Yes, thats correct, $28. I'm having a really hard time selling this thing, not because it wont sell, but because I really dont wanna sell it and it's not costing me anything to keep. I really do need to pay off some of my new bike though.

Just for comparison on State Farm. I am 21 years old and also under my parents. When I called for a qoute it was nearly double what I was quoted from progressive. State Farm is outrageous for males unmarried or under 25. After 25 it is much better, but up until that it is insane.
Progressive seemed to have the best rates when I was checking a couple weekes ago. It was about $300/yr for a 96 EX500 and over $600/yr for a 07 500R

On my Ninja 500 I am paying Progressive 612/yr 250K/500K/100K full coverage. My DUI just got old enough to where they don't consider it anymore. This is down from 1292/yr. My car ins. dropped by a half too. Don't drink and drive.
