Hey,

Everyone on this forum says that you need to start on a 250 cc or 500 cc bike. My experience, being a totally foolish guy who actually bid on a GSXR 600 before taking the MSF course and wound up buying a Ninja 250, is that starting small is often good.

For one thing, no matter how special you are, you're going to drop the bike. Picking up a 300 lb bike is going to be a lot easier and a lot less embarassing than picking up a 450 lb 600 cc bike. This will be especially hard in NYC. When I interned at an I-Bank out there last summer, I quickly discovered that once you were on the street, you're pretty much invisible to everyone else; nobody's going to stop and help you pick up the bike.

Speaking of invisible, are you really ready for NYC traffic on a bike? I can take a car down FDR drive, but even I wouldn't feel comfortable riding a bike within about 10 miles of the city. A 250 or 500 cc sport bike will still let you keep up with traffic (in fact, the Ninja 500 goes from 0-60 faster than a Ferrari), but it won't have you looking down at the clutch quite as much.

However, you asked a question, and I want to try and help answer it, with the caveat that I've warned you that you're probably going to kill yourself on a 600 cc:

Suzuki issues a warning that says that GSXRs are for expert riders. By process of elimination, the R6 might be a little bit safer.

I retract my earlier comments and defer to whatever advice mssdrider gives.

the R6 is just as agressive, if not more so, than the GSXRs.

To the OP: i'm tired today so I won't be my usual bitchy self and just answer your question.

The 600ss now a days are so similar in performance that it doesn't matter what you get. and there aren't any recalls as far as i know, but wait for the responses of the other board members...

*edit: totally forgot: DON'T GET EITHER if you've only ridden on a 500 for a couple of months...

oh! and welcome to SBN (standard greeting)

It's because I tend to take my advice from you (among others)!

When I started posting, I figured I was the first to respond, and I also didn't know the guy had any experience on bikes before. Also, you're the one who rides a 600 cc.

i'd go back to the 500R, or maybe the GS500F if you didn't like the 500R for whatever reason... 250 is always a viable option, as they're hilariously fun little bastards.

depending on how long you've ridden (if a few months means like 6-8 and a lot of mileage), you might be adequately skilled for something along the lines of an SV650 or ninja 650R... if by "a few months," you meant more along the lines of 2-5, then yeah, stick to the 250/500s...

Wow, a few months, huh? That's amazing. You've obviously mastered that bike and won't ever face any adversity it might throw your way.
