New Rider ForumsJust joining the motorcyclist hobbie? Looking to get some information about a first bike? Or have some newbie questions. Are you new to the website?
Alright, so my motorcycle experience consists of 30 seconds on a 2001 600 F4I that I dumped halfway through a cul de sac turn.
I've always wanted a Ducati and after being deployed overseas for 15 months, finally had the means to buy one. When I saw the 1098 I decided I wanted one. Needless to say I didn't buy it because of power but because of the sex appeal of the bike.
All my friends have bikes and they have all been telling me to just ride the bike in a parking lot but after reading on here and simply sitting on the bike I know it's way too much bike for me to handle. I was enrolled in an MSF course but stopped going when I saw they were running 250's....for whatever reason I got the feeling that learning on a 250 and jumping to an 1100 would get me killed. Now I'm reconsidering..........
I guess my question is what bike should I purchase to learn on before I actually start on the 1098? I'd like to get something bigger then a 250 simply because I think that would involve multiple steps before I can ride my bike. I was considering a Suzuki SV650.......
Thanks for the honest replies. I value living and if I never ride the Ducati and live to be 100 I'll still be a happy man
Not interested in hearing that the 1098 is not a first/beginner bike as that is beyond obvious to me and the only reason I've found this forum and posted here in the first place.....

wow, just plain wow. First of all, sexy bike. I wish that somehow I could of come up with the money to buy a 1098 for myself.
Not to rag on you, but where the hell are people's brains at these days.
If you want some damn good advice, I would park that 1098 so you don't ruin its beautiful hide (and your own) and get a 250/500. More for the ducati's sake because it is perty, jk. Really do yourself a favor and learn to ride the right way. Learning on something that is too much for you will only cause you harm. It may not hurt you physically (if you are lucky) but it will harm you mentally. You will garner more skill by buying something that you can really learn on, that won't turn around and bite you for a accidental or stupid action.
If you don't feel like saving yourself, save the ducati and donate it to me

So your only riding experience is dumping an F4i in a cul-de-sac, but your skilz are so mad that you can't bear to ride a 250 in the MSF class? That's funny.
OK, enough of that silliness. Take the MSF class, then buy a used SV-650 with some of that tax-free dough (thanks for your service, btw). The SV is not a perfect bike for a beginner, but it's better than a 600 super sport, or God forbid, a 1098.
Have fun, ride safe,

Well the SV650 from what I've heard is fine. Heres some more you might(probably not) be interested in. GS500, Ninja 650r, Ninja 500r, Hyosung 250(Looks good and won't get you killed )
"for whatever reason I got the feeling that learning on a 250 and jumping to an 1100 would get me killed. Now I'm reconsidering.........."
Dude, learning to drive in a Ford Fiesta and then jumping into an F1 car might get you killed too, that's why we progress. Just because someone has "learned" to ride and has their MC license doesn't mean that they should go jump on a supersport bike right away. The truth is, we are always learning when we ride--we'll all be learning until the day we die.
Having said that, think of any other hobby or sport that you've played or participated in. You didn't have a short intro and then got dropped in the middle of a professional game, did you? Why not? Because you simply weren't ready for it. Motorcycling is no different, except if you screw up you don't strike out or throw an errant pass--you can get hurt and you can die.
All your friends with bikes telling you to get the ducati 1098 and ride it in the parking lot--full well knowing you have virtually no experience except dumping an F4i--are doing you a huge disservice.
So, to answer your question, yes you should purchase a bike to learn on before getting on the 1098. And, no I don't mean for 2 weeks. I mean until you are competent in ALL aspects of motorcycling, not just twisting the throttle and pulling the brake lever.
Good luck, and remember dude--It's your first bike, not your last. There will always be a time and a place for another one in the future.

I'm not feeling it. Sorry, but a buddist in the family doesn't make you open-minded. It just means you're bangin' a buddist.

dude, if you had been reading these forums for a while then you know you are gonna get flamed for this thread. i mean, who doesn't want a Duc 1098?
don't put the cart before the horse...take the MSF course. there is a reason that they give student riders with no experience 250s to ride during the course. as many will state in here, best to start on something less powerful and then graduate upward. if the Duc dealer had any ethics, he/she would tell you the same thing and not let you buy the 1098 knowing you have zero experience.

mods....GT501 tires, SV650 shock, dinojet kit, K&N filter, Flushmounts, fender elimin. with rear signals relocated in pods, Two Brother's. Soon to be done, sonic springs
Insure the living shit out of that 1098, and yourself for that matter.
And get a Suzuki GS500F and paint it Ducati Red.

I don't really have anything useful to add... but reading this thread does make me wonder why wreckedexotics.com doesn't have a section for motorcycles yet.

Honestly, five years ago if i had the money and saw a 1098, there is a GOOD chance i would have bought it. I did not know much about street bikes and would have gotten the sexiest one possible.
So i can't lay blame. And at least you have VERY good taste.
In all honesty, a ninja 500 is the way to go for you.
