Default Advice on riding gear for newbie?

I'll be getting my first bike soon and was wondering if anyone had suggestions of what type of gear I should look for. I need pants and jacket. I will be doing summer riding and I am 6 foot 180 lbs athletic build. What size would fit me? I was thinking a size 44 jacket and I don't know about the pants....if anyone has any suggestions from ebay feel free to post here! Thanks.

I would go down to a local cycle shop and try on lots of jackets and pants. Jackets all run different. You might be a 44 in one and 46 in another even from the same maker. There are different lines within the same manufacturer that will size differently when you wear them. Best thing to do is try on a few and walk around and move in them.

Pants usually run close to what you wear everyday but not always. Helmets MUST be tried on and MUST fit you properly or they will do you little to NO GOOD at all god forbid you need them.

My helmet fits me like a glove and I needed it a month or so back. Took a big hit and gouged the helmet bad but I never even felt a thing. Didnt even have a headache later.

Try on your gear and see what fits you best. At least you buying gear. Its a great start and can and will save you a lot of pain. I speak from experience here.

Good luck

at KomodoGear.com under "customer service" there's a series of sizing charts for suits, pants, jackets and so on. Hope that helps.

+1 to what Joey Numbers said about helmets...make sure you try on the model you are buying. I'm an "American Sized" dude (6 foot/190 lbs) and I figured I was a large in the HJC helmet I was buying. I wasn't, luckily an experinced dude was at the shop to explain to me how a helmet was supposed to fit. With that said I ended up buying a medium and I was nervous about it cause I haven't worn medium anything since highschool. The helmet fit great and I love it, I'm glad a helpful dude was present to help me make that important purchase.

Also, make sure the gloves you get fit correctly...I bought some XL gloves that are a lil loose(now after being more broken in), I should have bought larges. You live and you learn I guess.

I bought my Joe Rocket Sonic jacket used from ebay, and my AGVsport gloves new from ebay. Just google search the company that makes the item you are looking at and find their sizing chart. For example I went to Joe Rocket's website found their sizing chart and went from there.

Try it on at a store, then buy online. www.newenough.com has awesome deals all the time.

A helmet should be tight when new. It will break in. The first few weeks it should almost be uncomfortable. I'm a large in Arai but a medium in Shoei. Just bought a new shoei today in fact. Can't wait to wear it tomorrow.
