Yeah, dirt biking is the exact same thing.
For reference, please show me a professional racer that went from dirt to road WITHOUT starting on a smaller bike?

They are used to riding a bike somewhat out of control, so big slides and front-tire lock-ups don't panic them.
|
i'll agree with that but, that and basic operation of the controls are about all that's tranfered from dirt to street. i've kept from eating asphalt a couple times when traction went bye-bye due to dirt bike experience, but had i been a more experienced street rider, i probably could have avoided those loosey-goosey situations in the first place.
point is, street and dirt are totally different. you don't drag knees in dirt and you don't stick your foot out on the street. tecniques are nearly polar opposites. i have the hardest time for the first 5 miles when i go from street dirt or vice versa. riding one is not beneficial to the other. in fact, i think its detrimental.
and who suggested the SV1000 as a first bike? WTF man?

Fargin is right. He and I like to use the good cop/bad cop routine. He's the good cop.

Well you certainly learned something from our last talk about this. You know as well as I do that no one is saying dirt biking is exactly the same thing.

It's nothing too exciting. He asked how many professional racers had a motocross background and it turned out the list is rather long and illustrious. I'm sure the thread still exists somewhere, but I have no idea where.

I could see the list (even the current list) being fairly long for American/Canadian racers. It's probably rather much smaller for the Europeans, isn't it?
Remember the good old days when the AMA made you run both dirt and street.
Those guys were studs.

Actually most of the names I came up with were Australian. It seems like the almost all Australian road racers on the world stage from the 90s through today raced motocross in the 80s. You're probably right about Europeans; they have a farming system for road racing that doesn't leave any time for motocross. I know of one exception though: Chris Walker.

Motocross didn't make those guys great pavement riders and Champions, (Mladin comes to mind) they were great riders with immence talent to begin with.
Motocross and street riding/racing require very different and often counter-intuitive skills.
That doesn't mean that you can't be great at both. It just means riding MX does not automatically transfer skills to the street.

Of course riding offroad can't replace experience on pavement, but it is an excellent supplement. Denying that dirt riding helps is just plain silly.

I'll agree that it helps in the operation of clutch, brakes, and throttle independently, but beyond that I don't make much connection.
The differences in turning is enough for me. And turning is the biggest part of operating a vehicle that runs on two wheels.

The kind of dirt riding that helps with street skills isn't called motocross.

Mat Mladin, Troy Corser, Troy Bayliss, the three Gobert brothers, Aaron Yates, Scott Russell, et al. might disagree. Sure they never would have been so sucessful without immense natural talent, but is there a similar list of people with no riding experience who met with such instant success? Yeah there's Max Biaggi, but a list of one is pretty sad.
At least you say there's a kind of dirt riding that helps; I could never get Fargin to admit that.

Which simply proves that there's more in heaven and earth, Horatio. If you won't take my word for it, ask Harry Hurt.
