Talking Woohoo! Got my license (permit) today!

Yeah...so here in Quebec, it aint as easy as signing a peice of paper to get a motorcycle license (the rest of Canada is normal )..

You must:

-Take a written exam. 35 multiple choice questions blah blah blah.

-Once you pass the exam, you get a "6R" permit, which allows you to ride with an approved riding school.

-Take MANDATORY classes with riding school. 2 weekends; 18 hrs in a closed course, + 4 hrs on the road (pretty similar to the MSF....I think this should be mandatory everywhere, personally).

-Once you do the courses, get an endorsement from the school and take a closed course test at the license bureau. Stuff like riding in a circle, countersteering, emergency braking etc. All stuff below 20 mph.

-If you pass this you get your 6A Learners Permit (which I got today! ). Now, this permit allows you to ride any time/any cc bike, but ONLY alongside another rider, who has 2+ experience. You MUST have this permit for at least 7 months before going for your full license This sucks because even if you want to go for a short ride around the block, you MUST call a buddy and have him ride with you.

-After 7 months, you can take your full 6A test, which is again at the license bureau. The tester gives you a headset, and follows you in a car, giving you instructions via the headset. When you pass this test, you have your full license. If you fail, you gotta wait 56 DAYS to do it again!

Lucky for me theres a guy in my building that rides, so I'm gonna be bugging him every chance I get.

So yeah..thats my story. See you on the road! Stay safe!

congrats! i wish they did this here. They passed people in my MSF class where if i see them on the road i'd pull over because they'd probably kill me in the process...

Same thing in my class. They finally passed 2 80y/o after they had failed the classs FIVE TIMES!

CONGRATS on getting your license! Too bad they don't do something like that here.

Some of those things I dont agree with, but I think the rest of north america could adopt bits and peices from that process. I dont agree with a learners permit and having to ride with someone else for that long of a duration. What the hell do you do if you dont know any riders and want to get licensed? I didnt really know any riders when I first got mine. I only bought a sportbike because Ive been in love with them since I was like 8.

I wouldnt complain if everyone had to do the written, that mandatory training, closed course test (skills demonstration, whatever you'd like to call it), then a road test for your license.

I did a 20 question test ( score 16 or under=fail). Then had an instructor follow me while I rode a bike for 10 minutes around a neighborhood demonstrating I could ride in a relatively straight line and go around corners at 15km/h without killing myself. Tada, licensed. I rented a bike from them because my ninja had a broken signal lense. They told me to go ride it around until I got comfortable on it before I even took my test.

Yeah, I prefer the mandatory courses. I read online that Quebec dropped the mandatory courses from 1997-2000, and fatalaties increased by a whopping 48%!!!

Actually, even if courses werent mandatory, I couldnt imagine riding without them. It's really a whole different world compared to a car. Theres a lot to learn, and you screw up, you break your ass ;)

Yay! Just went for my first (little ride)! MY buddy wasnt around...so I just went by myself :p Just went a few KM to get some gas, and messed around in the nearby deserted industrial area and then came home. Didnt wanna push my luck too much ;) So far, so good! The Bandit feels pretty stable at all speeds, and pretty confidence inspiring in the turns. Engine seems smooth, although, out of its 14,000 rpm redline, I only went up to around half! Feels plenty fast!

Congrats on getting your permit!

It doesn't make much sense to force you to ride with another rider though. That just makes it more difficult and less likely you will get enough experience to pass the test for the real license.

Telling people to shut up isn't acceptable behavior in this forum.
