Ok that is an old one with alot of miles on it. The questions that I would be asking is what size is it. And what kind of care was taken on it.

I have the same question. I found a 2002 VFR ABS with 5.8k the other day for $4300. I am tempted to spring for it but I do not want to get in wayyyy over my head with my first street bike. I have the MSF but I don't want to get a VFR if the knowledgable here think it is too much for a first bike.

how much is he asking? that will determine if its a good deal or not.
as far as starting on it, better than starting on a new bike

Let's see, it has won numerous championship races...it's too much for a new rider.
Great bike, just not so for a first bike. It'd make a good second or third.
I wouldn't worry about mileage on VFRs if it's been taken care of. If you check out the VFR forum (not here) you'll see a few with over 100k on the original engine.

the interceptor 500 would make a decent beginner bike. parts for it might be getting hard to come by though. i wouldn't worry about the 21k miles as long as its been taken care of.
as for the '02 i wouldn't recommend it for a beginner. its supposed to be a fairly tame bike but the VTEC can be tricky, especially for a new rider. its also a big fat pig. it weighs around 550 lbs realdy to roll and has lots of expensive plastic on it that will likely get broken when you drop it.

VFR750 is a bad bike to learn on. It's heavy and powerful.
Not to mention that if it breaks, you're screwed on costs.

That's what I had concluded but I guess I wanted another opinion. The thought of a 500lb bike does not sound that appealing in heavy traffic when I am just starting out. I am just having a real hard time finding a 250 used this time of year. I am about to step up and include 500s in my search and just live with the steeper learning curve. Or just get a honda rebel, those are cheap and available and would serve nicely for a year or two.

In between the power of the Ninja 250 and Ninja 500 is the GS500. So if you're hesitant to look for ex500s check out the GS500.

I just bought an '84 VF500 as the first bike I've owned.
I'm looking forward to it and I believe it will be an awesome bike for me. I've got one full season of riding under my belt, but it wasn't on a sportbike.

This month's issue of Motorcyclist has a big article on VFR Hondas and spends a lot of time talking about the first model VFR750. There are some good and bad points listed.
I rode a VFR750 once, back in the day when I only had a couple of years experience, and found it to be pretty heavy and not very user friendly. I still think they are very cool looking and always craved one, but the truth is they just aren't a good beginner bike.
