New Rider ForumsJust joining the motorcyclist hobbie? Looking to get some information about a first bike? Or have some newbie questions. Are you new to the website?
Just got my first Bike and i have a question allerady!
I got a 2007 ZZR600 for my Starter bike and i am loving it. Of course i am in the break in period so i am trying to keep it at or Below 4K RPM and then once i hit over 500 miles intill a 1000 then i can go to 6K RPM.
My Question is this though and it's about the Fuel Economy on my first Full tank i got up to 126 Miles on it then it lost power and it wouldn't start up so i switched to the Reserve Tank and it went with no problems. I went straight to the Gas station (Scared to run out of Gas) and filled up and it took only 2.7 Gallons. I thought the Gas tank was 4.8 with the Reserve? I dont know if i am doing something wrong or i have to learn to ride on the reserve for a small amount of time but i am just curious if i am missing something!
Thanks! I have been riding Dirt bikes for about 17 years and now i am making the Cross over to Street Bikes. It's such a Blast but in no way i am going to get stupid with it. Saving on Gas and Enjoying the ride!
as for your question, reserve is usually only about a half gallon so theoretically it should have taken around 4 gals but its hard to get a tank filled to capacity with the bike on a sidestand and if you're not used to filling a bike. when it looks like its full and the pump shuts off, you can usually get another half gallon or more in there by barely squeezing the pump handle and filling slowly until it reaches the top of the tank. you can also sit on the bike and hold it upright while fueling to get more in there but i don't recommend that. gas on your junk is not a good thing. don't forget to turn the petcock back to "ON" after you refuel too lest the next time you run out of gas you really run out of gas.

Congrats on the new bike!!! Dont get crazy after the break in period. Just because the bikes ready to get up and go it doesn't mean you will be. Take it slow and ride smart and always wear your gear!!!!
How about some pics?
This may get interesting

Thanks for answering his actual question and not adding to the powerful bike crowd and popcorns. Give the guy a break already.
I think I'm getting around 138 miles or so before hitting reserve, can't remember exaxtly.
This is a newb question for sure, but how do you avoid running it until the engine shuts off before you go to reserve. There's no light or anything right? Just use the trip odometer to guess?

You get a "feel for it" the trip meter is your best friend on the kawi's. You have to check the manual to see how much is left when you hit reserve, then you have some idea on how many miles. (one gallon, or half gallon) I generally start heading to the station afer hitting reserve or almost hitting it. Pushing your bike is no fun.

I have a suzuki with the warning light letting me know when I'm running low. Does the kawi's have any type of warning feature?
Even with the light I still use the trip meter to let me know whats going on with gas because as you say it sucks to push a bike.I usually fill up before the light comes on.Dont want to be out far from gas station when light comes on.

The ZZR doesnt come with a warning light, much less a gauge.
I like to fill up at around 100-110 miles. Keep me from looking like a squid pushing my bike down the road.

I have a light on the Ducati. When I had the old GS I just went by the feel and the trip meter. When the engine felt like it was cutting out and the trip read 220 then it was time for reserve.
How do you know that the 1st tank was full? Dealers don't always FILL the tank when you pick the bike up. May have been left a gal or so short by the person that preped the bike. You should prpbably be able to get about 185-200 miles max before hitting reserve. Less if you are pushing the bike hard or fighting wind. I ALWAYS reset my tripmeter to 0 after filling, even with a gas guage. You can NEVER trust a kawi gas guage to be accurate.
