Default katana?

ok so I plan on buying my first bike but im unsure on what to get as of now. my friends that ride keep saying to get a gixxer or r6. but i think that they are just to much for a learner while i do have some time behind some 100/125cc mx bikes and have road alittle on a rebel 250 i still think that they are to big.

so here is the question i have noticed the the katana does not have the power and numbers of the other 600 and it is actualy closer to the 500r in numbers so is the katana 600 a decent bike that wont kill my learning? and i have been told that is is a touring bike not a sport bike and i dont know the differnce can some one explain?

The only downside to starting on a Katana is the weight. If you've had some seat time on mx bikes you know the basics. For most people that's the hardest part.

yeah i have the basics and actually i think riding mx bikes hurts people in some ways cause when i got on my first road bike i had to break the habit of turning the bars. cause i learned real fast that that is a no no. i mostly ride quads but i love bikes.

and what of the difference between sport and touring?

It'll have a less aggressive seating position, and probably a more smooth power delivery than a 600SS. It's also an air-cooled engine vs. the water-cooled 500R- simpler maintenence-wise a bit. My Seca has an air-cooled 600 as well, it's been a good starter bike, except like the Katana it's a bit heavy. IIRC the 500R is maybe 350ish in weight, vs. ~440 wet for my Seca. I had a couple 'duh' incidents my first week of ridnig where it got away from me at a standstill and I laid it down gently.

Katana is HUGEEEE, thing is a boat.

EX500 & GS500F, take a look at those for a first bike. Insurence on those are much more "teenager friendly."

the ninja 500r will weigh, realistically, 420lbs full wet for a gen1 (pre-'94)
It gained 15 lbs or thereabouts in gen2, though the weight gain was definitely worth it (rear disk brake, 17" wheels, etc.)

The GS500 lacks watercooling I believe, and as a result will weigh less than a gen1 ninja 500, I'd hazard a guess at 400lbs full wet.

I was at a Suzuki dealership yesterday, and the guy was trying to sell me a used 2000 (or maybe 2002?) Katana 600...for my first bike. I dunno...the thing just looks HUGE, I didnt even want to get on it. I much preferred the SV650 and Bandit 600 next to it.

All the Katanas have the best seat, ever. Thick, plush, and your passenger is almost level with you.

Katanas are awesome. They might be, on paper, heavier than any 600cc (or 1000cc bike, for that matter), but I find them very agile to ride. The bars are high up, and very wide, so the bike doesn't feel heavy at all.

They are tanks. I personally wouldn't recommend them as starter bikes.

They have worse steering lock and less leverage at the bars than a Ninja 500 does as well.

Not to mention that the motor has it's power concentrated in the top of the powerband, which is less friendly to a new rider.

So you guys wouldn't recommend a Katana to a new rider?

I found a very clean 1997 Katana 600 in my area for 2100. It only has 1500 miles. I'm planning on checking it out this weekend.

Nope. I wouldn't recommend it.

A clean Ninja 500 should set you back the same amount or less anyway. It'll save you money in insurace and gas as well.

I've been looking for Ninja 500s for about 2 months. Having a very hard time finding a good condition 94+ for around 2000. All of the ones that are advertised as having minor damage are actually kinda fucked up.
