Question lane splitting

i have a question regarding lane splitting at stop lights on roads with multiple lanes. what speed should you be going? and what should you do if the stoplight turns green while you are making your way to the front? im new at this and have been wondering what to do during these situations. any other advice for lane splitting would also be helpful. thanks.

When you filter up to the front of red lights, you should be going very slowly. I can't tell you an exact mph, but definitely not enough to freak out anyone in the cars next to you. And since there's usually even less space between cars on surface streets as opposed to the freeway, I'm extra careful about not pinging their mirrors.

I try to make sure I see when a light turns red so that I know approximately how much time I have to get to the front. If I come upon a bunch of stopped cars and I'm not sure how long the light's been red I usually won't try to filter to the front unless it's only a couple cars.

If the light turns green as you're filtering and you're not to the front yet, I would signal to get back into a lane, look over my shoulder, and maybe put my hand up as a "thank you" to whoever would be letting me back in. I don't think it's very awkward to do that.

+1 on the light turning green. I sneak back and and always wave thanks to whoever I just cut off. But I do try to avoid it if I think they light is going to change soon.

Default Lane Splitting

Lane splitting can be dangerous to your health and cause head splitting. Chill out and don't be in such a hurry. There's a prick out there in a cage just waiting to test your reflexes.
