Shouldn't hurt anything to be at higher rpm unless you're in redline.

...you can definitely keep it in the lower 2/3 of the tach.

Most people just cruise @ low RPM and only really keep the RPMs up on spirited rides, the track, or when in heavy traffic where you need more throttle response/control/feedback.

Dogging your engine (getting RPM's so low the engine sounds like it will stall) and sitting in the red area or bouncing off the rev limiter are bad for your engine over time. Anything else in the middle is fine for the bike. Most people suggest you stay in the powerband just so you have power on tap if you need to accelerate RIGHT NOW to get out of trouble in traffic.

For an I-4, that bike makes power at relatively lower rpms.
It pulls best between 6-12k rpm. For most situations, you want the engine right around 6k when it's about to explode in power. IIRC you can cruise in top gear at about 80mph turning 6-7k rpms.

Why does your profile say FZ1?

im sick of hearing about needing to keep a bike at rediculous RPM's to have any power. ive never riding one that didnt have way more than enough for very spirited riding at 50%.

Have you taken any formal training?

You also may want to consider going smaller still and taking a class in riding.

Not to sound like a dick, but if you don't know how to ride it the "right" way, maybe your bike is too advanced for your current level of riding.

I agree. You need some formal training. The MSF explaines all of that suff the first day. TS80 is right if you need to ask a question about normal riding and where the RPMs should be then there is a problem. That 600 just seems like it is too advanced for you. I think you sould go with a 500 right now.

i have the same bike and i keep it around 4k when cruising, its not even close to peak power but its more than enough to take you from 35 to 50 faster than youll ever need it to

Agreed..at 8000RPM, my bike still pulls pretty decently hard. The only reason I keep it above that is for instant throttle response, and that orgasmic feeling of rocketing out of a corner onto a straight...perhaps lofting the front wheel in the process

I have a YZF600R. With enough seat time, you will know what RPM range you need/want to be in for the type of riding you're doing. Around the city, I rarely get out of 3rd gear. On the highway, I'm in 4th or 5th.

I commute to work on yzf600r almost every day weather permitting. 3500-4000 rpm is normal rpm for me (more on highway).

I could keep up with porsche carrera on highway in 6th gear once (70-100mph) just playing with the guy, why in the hell do you need to keep it in 4 or 5?
