Default Dampers and stabilizers

When it comes to preventing tank slappers, whats the difference between a stabilizer:

And a damper?

Nothing. That stabilizer is a damper. Its job is to make it harder for the wheel to make a quick turn from one side to the other. They're both basically shock absorbers for your steering, they just mount differently.

I would take a Scotts stabilizer over either because it has high and low speed damping.

However, you don't really need a stabilizer--it's just one of those things that is nice to have. At 450 to 550 bucks they are awfully expensive for what you get.

Almost all race organizations require them although a lot of bikes (such as my SV650) don't need them. And anyway, if you're going to do trackdays or race your bike you should be looking at reducing the steering stops (how far the handlebars can turn from lock to lock).
