Check out the motorcycle operator's manual:

"Illinois driver’s licenses are classified
according to the type and weight of
the vehicles to be driven. There are
two classifications for motorcycle
licenses:
Class L: Any motor-driven cycle
with less than 150cc displacement.
Class M: Any motorcycle or motordriven
cycle."

and

"A 24-month instruction
permit for a class M license
may be issued to an applicant
under age 18 only after successful
completion of an approved driver
education course and afterenrollment in an IDOT Motorcycle
Rider Education Course."

I'm actually from Missouri, I just looked the stuff up for you real quick on the internet, lol.
In Missouri you can get a motorcycle permit at 15.5 by taking the written test and a full license at 16 by taking the riding test.

In most states a m/c license is an "endorsement" on top of a car license. You have to start with a basic car license and then do what it takes to get your m/c license.

Your state's dmv (or whatever it's called in IL) web site will have the details. In CA, the details differ depending on age. 16-18 is one thing, 18-21 is another, and over 21 a third.

Here's IL:

Here's some more interesting IL restricitons on teen licenses:

In PA, or CA (only two states I had to know this for) you take a written test that confirms you know the rules of the road. They give you a learners permit, that allows you to drive. If you want to drive a bike, you also take a written motorcycle test of some sort and then you get a motorcycle learners permit.

In both states I didnt need an actual DRIVERS LICENSE i had a permit for both car, and bike.

That being said, you are only 16... how about starting on a GS 500, or Kawa 250 or 500... maybe the new kawa 650... 16 years old on a 600 Supersport is just a big slice of stupid pie if you ask me. You didnt ask me, but a 600 is a lot of bike... I dont think any 16 year old should be allowed on one. Just lookin out for ya!

Start on a 600, leave me in your will. Stereo would be nice, as would the wrecked bike.

i'm in PA, don't even have a driver's license (stupid permit) but i have my motorcycle license. insurance company wanted some ridiculous amount of money to add me to the policy ($1600 vs <$200 for the 250R) so i never took my test. i couldn't drive to my HS, i take public transportation to my job (cheaper and faster), and my college doesn't let freshman bring cars so i don't have much use for a car
