Default Buying used,, title transfers

Hey guys, any info on this topic would be much appreciated. I just got my m-class after motorcycle school and I plan on buying a used bike in the near, near future as I'm getting a serious itch to ride after 10+ hours on the bikes in class. Anyways, the question is pretty stupid and basic but I'm assuming most of you know.... how do you get the clean title transferred to your name and how do you get plates for it? I'm pretty oblivious to this whole process so any sort of a detailed explanation would be whole-heartedly appreciated.

Thanks all,
Tom

You get the title from the seller, fill it out, and take it to the DMV.

Then you hand it to them (the people at the DMV). Then you NEED to show proof of insurance to get a car registered! You can have your insurance company fax it to the branch of the DMV that you're going to if you havent had a chance for it to come in the mail yet.

THEN you pay sales tax, registration, and title transfer fees. You can fudge the amount of purchase on the title if you want, they'll never know. I always put 500 bucks for a bike. Unless it's a Ducati, no one will question. That way it's much cheaper. You can be honest if it makes you feel better, though.

And that's it. They'll send you your title with your name on it in the mail in a few weeks, they'll give you a plate, and registration.... and you're done!

It's really a fairly painless process.

It varies by state and not sure about the details in IL. Basically you get the clean title signed off by the seller and take it wherever you usually do motor vehicle licensing. In CA it's the DMV. You pay fees, maybe sales/use tax, and get the registration in your name. New title is usually sent in the mail. In CA plates stay with the vehicle unless they're personalized. You may get new plates at the motor vehicle office or they may get mailed.

Hopefully somone from IL will post up with the correct details. The important part is for the title to show no lien and have the seller's signature on it releasing his/her interest.

(Kevin, you beat me this time. ) You may only have to show an insurance card from a current vehicle and sign an intent to provide insurance. That's the way it works in CA any way. Plus any new vehicles purchased are automatically covered for 10 days until you contact your agent.

i noticed that.

here.... i'm nice!

(i'm moving to IL in august, so i've been doing some checking up)

http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/pu...s/vsd29313.pdf

it doesnt mention proof of insurance. I was pretty sure that they require it to register, though. I was checking because i thought i would be moving there last week, and need to register my bike.

EDIT: all i could find was that when you renew registration, you have to sign it saying that you have valid insurance.... don't know- the website got changed recently, and it SUCKS compared to a few months ago!!
