New Rider ForumsJust joining the motorcyclist hobbie? Looking to get some information about a first bike? Or have some newbie questions. Are you new to the website?
I've been reading these forums for a long time....I've even posted a couple of times. There's lots of great information and I'm making the most of this resource to pick a first bike wisely. Someone local to me is selling a 92 Honda CB250 and it's been on the market for several weeks at this point. It's been down before; it has a scraped engine cover on the left side (or is it a clutch cover on that side?) and broken left rear turn signal. I've got the motorcycle evaluation guide from here: http://www.clarity.net/~adam/buying-bike.html. As long as there isn't something catastrophically wrong with it, I'll be buying gear (helmet, jacket, gloves, maybe overpants and maybe boots if I find something I could walk around in at school....any recommendations?) and insurance tonight (a 92 CB250 is suprisingly cheap to insure, and I'm probably going to go with a decent amount of coverage through Progressive for less than $200) as well as posting a picture or two here.
Oh yeah, I completed MSF and got my M endorsement last summer and I haven't been on a bike since. The nearest class is about 2 hours away and it isn't really an option for me to retake it until this summer (although it would be a good idea). Can anyone help me recreate some of the most important exercises? I obviously won't be riding anywhere until I get insurance and gear, but even then I'm going to need lots of practice before I feel confident driving on the road. Thanks.
Congrats on deciding on starting out small! With practice, you'll become a very good rider.
Get to a parking lot and practice basic manuevers. Going straight, stopping, quick stops, left and right turns from stops, left and right turns while moving. Do you still have your handbook from the class? They detail a lot of practice exercises...
I think I have my handbook filed away somewhere...it'll require some looking around but I know I wouldn't have thrown it away, I'll check it out when I get back.
EDIT: I found my rider handbook, but it's just what we did in the classroom, no riding exercises are even mentioned in it unless I'm blind.

Reason: New Information
Everything went well, the bike came with the a new turn signal (to fix replace the broken one) but is missing the left mirror, some little reflectors that go on the front fork, and the speedometer isn't working but it came with the part to fix it (as well as the service manual). I still don't have gear, or plates so I can't ride yet but I'm finally part of the club.
Ya congrats and a good decsion to start with a 250, but ya as far as exercises go every once and a while i still just go to an abandoned parking lot set up a few cones(or rocks or whatever you have ) practise a lil slalom course and some quick accelerating and braking just some stuff like that so you can really get a the feel of your bike and be able to handle it well. It never hurts to go and practise the seemingly simple stuff and i'm sure most of the more seasoned riders in here will agree that they still practise the lil things in order to be a more complete rider.
YAY!!!! someone on this board finally got one of those!
I have an oil filter for one, new in the box! I want to get rid of it, and can't throw it out. just how i am.
Pretty sure it'll fit your year... and i've had it since i got my old bike... but it should still be good. as a welcome to the site present, you get it free!!
If you're interested, PM me your address and i promise it'll get to you before you die. Other than that, no guarantees..... i've been busy lately....

To be a 92 that looks to be in pretty damn good shape. Congrats and welcome to the club.
Thanks. It's got its issues, but they're all minor (except the front tire). I've had a string of bad luck with the weather here so I've only put about 50 miles in but I'm having a great time and I think tomorrow will be gorgeous out.
