Bigger Rider noob question
Being 6'4" and about 280lbs (yeah a big boy) and new to riding, some 600's under me look like I am crushing the bike.....we have all seen it "fat guy on a little bike" .......so the question is.....what is a good starter sport bike for a bigger guy?

I'm 6'4" 330lbs and I started on a Kat 750 with no problem. Despite what people think about the kat, its a rock solid bike and great to learn on, at least for me. I recommend it. You can pick up a late model one in great shape up for ~$3500.

Any bike will have enough power to move you just fine. Well maybe anything 500cc or larger. Find a bike that seems to fit you. All of the current 600ss bikes are about the same (small) with too much power for a noob. SV650 ergos aren't too bad. An older Honda 600 F2 or F3 may fit you well. People are polar about the Katana. Either they hate it or like it. You decide but they are a larger, heavier bike. Start with the MSF course in any case. You'll likely be on a 250 in the course. That will give you an idea of the power of bikes.

I agree, definitely start with the MSF. And make sure you get a bike that you feel ergonomically comfortable on. Thats ctitical.

MSF is done, I guess mostly what I am asking is what bike sits the tallest and longest....ie the r6 seems smaller (body) then like a GSXR 600.......

I think the SV650s is the perfect starter but other than 30 lbs of weight its not a bit bigger than any ss. Inreality a big dude will look almost the same on a 600 as a lieter bike. I vote for the katana. I don't necessarly agree with a 750 though. A 2004 750 is a quarter inch shorter than a 600, and only a quarter inch higher. Newer rider should stick to 600. IMO.

Most liter bikes are not that much bigger than 600ss bikes. So I'd suggest sitting on them. I opened this thread thinking that it was some average sized guy trying to make excuses to get a bigger bike thinking he was a "big guy." You are a big dude though so I would just go to every dealer and sit on every bike available. I do like my SV650, it has more room than other bikes I've sat on.

I am now riding on a V-Max that has tons of modification done to it thanks to python motorsports......more like a R-Max than a V-Max. I like the sport bike feel even though my bike is sick. I have taken my friends 600rr out quite a bit and I like the way it rides so I am moving more in that direction now.........thanks for the advice guys and think I am going to do what JDSV650 suggested.
