Riding in Chicago/ winter
Hi all,
I got my bike 2 months back. I wanted to ask you guys...how many of you ride during the winter also...especially those of you in the northern states? I tried riding it in 50 degree weather and it was really cold. I guess I need winter gear.
What are the general suggestions in terms of gear, protection, precautions, road conditions, what to look out for?, is it worth riding in the winter in the first place?
thanks
Ashwin

As a fellow Chicagoan, I would reccomend two layers of pants, a leather jacket with liner, gerbing heated gloves, gore-tex boots (I prefer hiking boots over riding boots), and a full-face helmet. As long as its dry you should be good to go, just keep your riding time in line with the temperature. For example, don't plan a ride to Wisconsin when its 30 out--but if the sun is shining, don't hesitate to take it out for a little bit.

My brother used to ride in the snow everyday because it was his only form of transportation. Needless to say, he crashed every single day lol. Just take it slow if the roads are slick/icy, isn't hard to get a car out of control in those conditions, nevermind on 2 wheels.

As long as you have no exposed skin, and there isn't a laywer of salt all over the roads, keep in mind the tires will never heat up, I've ridden down into the 20's

i just don't see the point to torture yourself if you have a car... especially if it is close to freezing temps. unless i have no other choice i usually dont' ride below 45. but if you are going to ride in the winter, make sure you keep your hands warm.

I rode this morning and it was 38 degrees. Was warm enough for the quick 15 min. ride to work . Wouldn't go much farther though. Fingers got a bit cold need a liner for the gloves. This is probably as cold as it will get this winter here in Florida.
