I was wondering how i can get a lisence. I was also wondering if i have to get a permit before i get a lisence. If so how can i get my permit or lisence. Am i eligible to get a lisence right away after an MSF course?? Do i have to take a test or some sort at a DMV for a lisence?? Please help me out. thanks

I was able to get a permit after taking the written test and the only exception was I couldn't carry a passenger. I then took a parking lot test as pictured below.

Depends where you are at. In PA you can walk into the dmv and hand them a check or $10 and they hand you back a permit.

In CA it varies slightly depending on age (above 18 or not). If above 18, then cage license + written test + fee = permit. No freeway, no night riding, no passenger with a permit. MSF requires a permit. Permit is good for up to 6 months. On the bike test or passing MSF will get you a license endorsement. Check your state's DMV web site for details.

Here in TX after taking the msf course you are only required to take the written part of the exam.

no you dont need a permit to take msf. the msf class gives you a voucher/certificate of completion of the class, and then u take a writing portion of the test at the DMV. but i dont know if i get the permit after, or the license. can someone help?

Try:

The requirements depend on your age (under 18, 18-21, over 21). Seems to me that if you're old enough to ride a bike, you should be old enough to search your state's dmv web site. I thought that a permit was required to take the msf in CA?

Nope, my mistake. If you have a cage license, you don't need a m/c permit to take the msf class.

For comparison, in Virginia, you are required to hold a learner's permit for 30 days before you can get an M/C endorsement. You need to take the written test only to get it and it costs $2. After 30 days, you can take the road test or present proof of MSF completion and you get your Class M. Pretty easy. I got my learner's the day I signed up for the MSF (which was 4 months away at that time) and just sat on it. When I finished the MSF, I walked in the DMV the following Monday and walked out an hour later with my license in hand.

Even with MSF completion but without the learner's permit, I would have had to get the permit and wait 30 days before getting my full license. A little advance planning helps. Besides, you don't need to ride or have a bike to get a learner's but having it makes you insurance legal when you do ride (provided you are obeying its restrictions) and starts your clock.
