You need Liability to cover damage YOU might do to others. Most states require only this. However, you might want to consider full coverage. There are people out there who want to ride your bike, and they will if you leave it unsecured or unattended very long. Read the posts here!!! Also there are people driving around out there with NO insurance. You might appreciate coverage in you happen to meet on of these creatures. And finally, occassionally, you will come out to find your bike sleeping on its side with its various parts strewn about like lingerie at Heff's place. On these days you will really appreciate full coverage. It's up to you. I don't know your age, but I get full coverage with uninsured motorist for about 850 per year on my '04 F4i

I only have liability on my 500R. Right now my insurance record isbad so its expensive for me. i knew speeding in my car would come back to bite me in the ass on day.
The way i see is if i get damage the bike alone im not making a claim and if someone else hit me there insurance pays. i cant afford to make any claims for the bike unless its totaled.

I have liability only on my F4i. Full coverage on my '93 F2 would've been about $1000/yr; that's on a bike worth about $2,500. I didn't bother asking what it would've been on my F4i. Fortunately, the bike is garage kept and I live in a pretty safe town (theft-wise).
FYI, I pay $180/yr for liability-only through Progressive.

I'd say full coverage... however, I'm not running that at the moment because I can't afford it for another six months due to my driving record. Definitely risky, but a risk I'm willing to take because I'm in a position where wadding up my bike won't crush me financially.

Riding isn't only about the scratching on a Sunday morning. Sometimes it's about the 400 mile ride on Saturday to get to where you'll be scratching on Sunday morning with a 400 mile ride home that evening.

Actually the age of 20 will have a greater effect on pricing. Shop every company you can get to quote you. When I bought my F4i, I was priced from $ 600.00 to $ 4000.00 per year depending on coverage and company. Some companies gave me a take-it-or-leave-attitude, some were really rude dogs and some were pleasant (for insurance companies) Just remember, YOU are the customer. YOU are spending the money. and if you choose their company, they are working for YOU.

any companies i should look at?
my car is insured and owned by the parents, and we have mercury. im not quite sure if they do motorcycles also, but i understand that some companies give you a discount if your'e currently insured with them -- which really ahs no effect in this situation since ill be buying and insuring the bike myself.

If you're going to spend at or less than $1500 all you may want is comprehensive to cover the bike in case it gets stolen. For something so cheap I wouldn't even bother with collision.

kinda the same thing I was thinking, and have been told by a few other people tas well; im not planning on spending too much on my first bike [around 2.5k at the most, 1500-2000 being the target], and paying more than my bike is worth each year for insurance doesnt really make sense. :/

I'm with State Farm and I pay $273/year for full coverage....but I have a clean driving record & I also have my car and home insured with them....I would recommend full coverage....but you also have to take into consideration your age, state you live in & driving record....<note-I originally was covered with Progressive for $1500/year...my agent was screwing me royally....so make sure you shop around>

i dont think ill be getting very good rates taking my age and my one at-fault accident into consideration...ill have to look into it more, after MSF and after iget the bike...
progressive quoted me @ 1300 for [30/60/15] liability only and 1389 for [50/100/25] liability only
add in UIM/UMC and comp/coll and it's something like 3000+
